BOX-LID HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1908.
Application filed September 18, 1907. Serial No. 393,443.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALDEN C. OLANDER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Box-Lid Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combination box lid holder and price tag, designed particularly for use in connection with cigar boxes.-
Box lid holders are in existence which hold the lid open at an angle to the body of the box, the lid being held rigidly in raised posi- These have the defect that it is difficult to lift a box and remove it from the show case, because of the space or room required.
The object of the present invention is to provide a holder in which the lid is yieldingly held, so that it may be swung down in substantial parallelism with the top of the box, so that the box can be removed from the show case without interfering with the other boxes in the case.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a box provided with the device. Fig, 2 is a perspective of the device removed from the box.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 6 indicates the body of the box and 7 the lid thereof hinged as usual. The holder comprises a pair of clips indicated respectively at 8 and 9, the former of which engages the edge of the end of the box and the latter of which engages the end of the lid at the edge thereof. The clip 9, on the lid, is made sufliciently large at the front to receive a price mark or tag, and may be ornamental in shape if desired.
The two cli s are connected by a coiled spring 10, within which is a loose or unattached rod 11. The s ring is held in tension between the clips, an the rod-serves to prevent the spring from swinging the lid forward beyond a certain position, which may be varied as desired by adjusting the position of either ofthe clips. Behind the box lid the clip 9 is preferably provided with a downwardly-extending spring finger or piece of metal 12, of sufficient rigidity, however, to sustain under strain the weight of a full box of cigars.
In removing a box from the show case, the lid is grasped at the top as usual and the box lifted. The effect of this is to elongate the spring 10 and to cause spring finger 12 to bend and slide down the back of the boxuntil the lid is substantially parallel or level with the top of the box, so that the box requires a comparatively narrow space for its removal. When the box is replaced and the lid released, the spring 10 elevates the lid to the original position, the upward movement, as said before, being limited by the rod 11. If desired, the piece 12 may be omitted, the spring 10 being made of sufficient strength to support the box when extended in consequence of the weight thereof.
1 claim 1. A box lid holder comprising an extensible spring connected at opposite ends to the lid and the box, and tending to close the lid, and means supported by the spring to stop the swing of the lid toward the box.
2. A box lid holder comprising clips adapted to respectively engage the body and lid of a box, a coiled extensible spring connected at its opposite ends to the clips and in tension tending to close the lid, and a rod loosely held within the s ring and arranged to stop the swing of the id toward the box.
3. Abox lid holder comprising a pair of clips adapted to respectively engage the body and lid of the box, a spring connecting the clips, and a finger secured to the clip on the lid and extended downwardly behind the lid, in position to contact at its lower end against the back of the box the clip on the lid being adjustable to vary the tension of the spring and also the contact of the finger.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature,
in presence of two witnesses.
