ISAAC SMITH ROSS, OF WOODWARD, OKLAHOMA.
DEVICE FOR IDENTIFYING GARMENTS AND HEADWEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 12, 1907. Serial No. 378,488.
No. 890,530. Patented June 9, 1908.
To (all whom it may concern: ship of the article whereon the badge is Be it known that I, ISAAC SMITH Ross, a placed, as will presently be fully explained. citizen of the United States, and a resident of 1 Upon the rim of the case 5, a ring eye (1 is \Voodward, in the county of I/Voodward and formed or secured, and upon the convex State of Oklahoma, have invented a new and l back surface of said case a hook c is secured Improved Device for Identifying Garments by one end so as to depend below the ring (1, Emil fleadweail", of \hllcll thet followmg IS a l 2LSr]S:l11O\VIl best 1111 Figs. 3 and 4. 1 d 1 t u c ear, L11 exac escri ion. 1e spring 0 asp comprises a cope p a e The purpose of this invention is to rovide metal frame 6, having two substantially para novel, simple device that is especia ly well allel jaws, between which a resilient looped adapted for readily and conspicuously markplate member 9 is introduced and secured ing temporarily, a coat, hat or umbrella, by one end upon one llIllb of the U-shaped that may be hung or placed exposed closely frame 6. A latch limb h is pivoted at one tr; like rarticlelsflbelonginlglto otheigelSolgill (and fin a slJt fognfied 11 21 the IOPEOSFDE lfnlfbflOf 3 aces or u 1c assem ies ant ius aci ie rame an rom lie ivo e enc 0" 1e tate the siiie identification bf ones personal latch limb ashort toe h, pr djects through. the wear or property, without an objectionable slot and into engagement with the free end examination of the belongings of other perof the looped spring 9. sons. And, furthermore, to instantly indi- It will be seen in Fig. 3, that when the cate to othrzr partfies that theybhafie sgelected latch hmfilh 1s ropoked fsodas fto he 1,151 slot, O 1 v tllf m e 0 or um 16 a y n B (iteti fifionftfl iteif iviiffirei s timf tl i e fill.
end of the looped spring 9 and depress it, whereby the clasp is held upon material that may be placed within the looped spring g.
The peculiar hanger pin 7, as shown best in Fig. 5, isformed of a single strand of wire rod bent into form as follows. One end portion 7) of the wire strand is pointed at its extremity, as shown at i in Fig. 3, and at a proper distance from this point the wire is bent into a single coil t the portion i constituting the pin proper. From the coil 47, the wire rod is returned toward the point i, and in said material nearly opposite the point i, a lateral bend i is produced, that affords a keeper hook which receives and holds the pin point, this engagement serving to secure the pin in material it may have been thrust through. Near the keeper hook i an offset 1" is bent on the return bent portion of the wire rod, and at said offset a single coil is formed pro ducing a ring F. From the keeper hook 0?, the remaining portion of the wire rod is bent into a curved member i, and thence extends toward the coil i thus providing a hook member The coupling chain 8 is of sufficient length for a proper connection of the parts 7, which is effected as follows. One extremity of the chain 8 is secured upon the ring eye d, thus connecting the badge therewith. At a suitable point between the ends of the chain, a ring m is introduced therein The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of details, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is 'a perspective view, showing the device as applied upon a hat for its identification; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device somewhat enlarged, and applied upon the lapel of a coat, Fig. 3 is a detached enlarged side view of the complete device, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view of a checkor badge in medallion form, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged perspective view of the pin.
The invention briefly described comprises a check or badge 5, a spring clasp 6, a novel hanger pin 7, and a chain 8, that serves to connect the other parts and hold the badge in position for its conspicuous display.
The badge is preferably constructed as shown in the drawings, and consists of a plate metal case 5, cut and stamped into circular form, and rendered concave on one side as appears in Fig. 4, the opposite side being convex correspondingly.
Within the shallow chamber a, afforded by the concavity at one side of the case 5, an address card b is placed, that is held in place. by a spring ring 0, and indicates the owner- 5, 6 and.
forming a part thereof, and as shown this ring is coupled with a perforation in one end of the looped frame 6. The remaining shorter portion of the chain 8 is affixed to the ring i as indicated in Fig. 3, thus completing the connection of the coacting portions of the composite device.
In applying the device for identification of a hat, the spring clasp 6 is hooked upon the free edge of a sweat band A of a hat A, and the badge 5 allowed to hang pendent, as also may the hanger hook 7, which, however, is indicated by dotted lines as being tucked between the body; this application of the improvement being represented in Fig. 1.
The arrangement of the device when the hat is hung up is as shown in Fig. 1, which, as shown by dotted lines, will fully expose the badge 5 and indicate the ownership of the hat having the latter hung therefrom.
The hook e on the case of the badge, may be hooked upon the sweat-band A, as shown in Fig. 1, when the device is not in use as a tag, and as the entire appliance is quite small, it will not incommode the wearer of the hat.
It will be obvious that the pendent badge will be so conspicuous that no one but the owner will claim the hat, and, if there are several hats hung closely together, the right hat may be selected by each person upon examination of the address card carried in the case of the tag or badge.
In using the device for identifying a coat or like garment B, the hanger pin 7 should be connected by an adjustment of the pin "L in the lapel of the coat, either upon the outside or beneath the same, and when not in service the entire device may be concealed by arranging the parts as clearly shown in Fig 2. If the coat is hung up or otherwise deposited while off of the person owning it,
sweat-band and the hat- I I tween the check and the badge or tag 5 is released from the hook i and allowed to depend from the coat collar, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 2.
It will be seen that the different parts of the composite device are coacting, and are of great advantage for the identification of personal wear or other portable belongings, such as an umbrella or other article which may be engaged by the hanger pin.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a check, a fastening means, a flexible connection between the check and the fastening means, and a supporting means in connection with the check, whereby the check may be supported adjacent to the firstnamed fastening means or permitted to depend therebelow.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a fastening means, a check having a hook connected thereto, and a flexible connection between the check and the fastening means, whereby the check may be supported adjacent to the fastening means, or permitted to depend. there below.
3. A device of the class described comprising a hanger pin having a straight body portion pointed at its free end, a spring coil on one end thereof, an off-set and ring coil at the opposite end, a check having a hook connected thereto, and a flexible connection bepin whereby the check may be supported adjacent to the pin, or permitted to depend there below.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC SMITH ROSS.
