SAFETY ATTACHING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 28, 1905.
Application filed March 14, 1905- Serial No. 250.029.
[0 aZ/I whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY C. HENZE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York,
. in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Attaching Devices,
of which the following is aspecification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to means for suspending a pair of eyeglasses from a vest or other garment and for attaching to or suspending from a garment a small watch or other device; and the object of the invention is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and operation and which may also be made to serve as an ornament, and which may be used for any of the purposes specified, together with various other purposes, which will readily suggest themselves.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front view of my improved fastening device, showing the parts in position for use; Fig. 2, a plan view thereof; Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 1, but showing the parts in a different position; and Fig. 4:, a plan view of the device as shown in Fig. 3.
In the practice of my invention I take a strong spring-wire, which may be made of gold, silver, or any other suitable metal, and in this wire at a predetermined distance from one end thereof I form a loop-shaped hook a, which when the device is in use or when the device is connected with a garment extends downwardly. The general form of the device is somewhat similar to that of a safety-pin, and one end of the wire for forming the loopshaped hook a is bent to form an arm 6, which is connected with the hook member a by a segmental curve 0, and the opposite end of the arm 5 is bent so as to form another segmental curve (Z, at the top of which is formed a coil 6, and the extreme end of said portion of the wire is formed into a pin f, which is pointed, as shown at g, and which when the device is in use engages the hook to. The
other end portion of the wire is bent to form a supplemental curved spring-arm 72/, which ranges transversely of the arm I) and projects below said arm and is formed into a spring ring or loop i, the end of which is provided with a circular head or knob j. The central portion of the arm 6 is bent outwardly to form a loop-shaped bend or projection It}, and the head or knob j at the free end of the spring loop or ring e'operates in connection with the loop-shaped bend or projection is to lock said free end of the loop or ring 2" in connection with the arm I), the locked position being shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and the open position in Figs. 3 and 4. As thus constructed it will be seen that the parts 6 and f constitute, in effect, an ordinary safety-pin, and this device may be connected with a vest, coat, or other garment and serves as means for suspending a pair of eyeglasses or a small watch or any other article of this class. i
In suspending a pair of eyeglasses from this device the spring-bow of the glasses is passed over or around the head or knob j at the free end of the open loop or ring iand is dropped into said loop or ring, and the head is pressed backwardly over the outwardly-directed loopshaped bend or projection in, and said end ongages said bend or projection and locks the loop or ring z', holding the glasses, as will be readily understood, and in suspending a small watch from this device the ring of the watch is manipulated in the same manner as the spring-bow of a pair of glasses. When it is desired to detach the glasses or other article, pressure is applied to the back of the head or knob 7', and said head or knob is forced forwardly into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4:, when the glasses may be easily detached, as will be readily understood, and this operation will be the same in the case of a watch or other article.
The spring-arm b, which constitutes the back or body portion of the safety-pin part of the device, will yield when pressure is applied thereto, and this is also true of the free end of the loop or ring 2', and this facilitates the operation of these parts, as hereinbefore described.
It will be understood that this device may be made of any desired size, and in practice, for the purposes herein specified, it is made smaller than it is shown in the drawings, and said device, in addition to serving for the purpose or purposes herein specified, also constitutes an attractive ornament.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. An attaching device of the character described, comprising an oblong body portion consisting of a bottom spring-arm and a top spring-pin connected at one end with the arm and adapted at its free end to engage a hook connected with the corres ponding end of said arm, said hook being provided with a curved arm which ranges transversely of the body portion and projects below the same and is formed into an open spring loop or ring the free end of which is provided with a head adapted to engage the central portion of the bottom spring-arm, substantially as shown and described.
2. An attaching device of the character described, comprising an oblong body portion consisting of a bottom spring-arm and a top spring-pin connected at one end with the arm and adapted at its free end to engage a hook connected with the corresponding end of said arm, said hook being provided with a curved arm which ranges transversely of the body portion and projects below the same and is formed into an open spring loop or ring the free end of which is provided with a head adapted to engage the central portion of the bottom spring-arm, and which is bent outwardly to form a projecting loop or bend in connection with which said head operates, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device of the class described, composed of spring-wire bent at a predetermined distance from one end to form a hook a, one end portion of the wire being then bent to form an arm 5 and a pin f, the other end portion of the wire being then bent to form asupplemental spring-arm it which ranges transversely of the arm 5 and the pin f, said lastnarned end portion of the wire being bent to form an open spring loop or ring iwhich extends below the arm lb, the free end of which extends upwardly and is provided with a knob or head 7' adapted to detachably engage the arm 6, substantially as shown and described.
4. A device of the class described, com prising an oblong body portion consisting of two substantially parallel members, one member of which comprises a spring-pin connected with the other member at one end and adapted to engage a hook at the opposite end, and a spring-arm connected with the hook portion and ranging diagonally and transversely of the body portion and the end of which is provided with an open spring coil or ring, the free end of which is provided with a knob or head adapted to engage the main body member, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my inventionI have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 13th day of March, 1905.
