Description

PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.-
H. H. MARTIN.
STOP COCK.
VAIPLIOATION FILED JAN.31. 190a.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HENRY H. MARTIN, OF MARYVILLE, MISSOURI.
STOP-COCK.
Application filed January 31, 1908.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY II. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maryville, in the county of Nodaway and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Stop-Cock, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in means for lubricating stop-cocks or turning plugs, and is especially adapted for use with gas-cocks.
The invention has for one of its objects to provide a simple arrangement for the purpose stated, in which the supply of oil or other lubricant is limited, thereby preventing any undue waste thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide an arrangement of the class descrlbed in which the cost of manufacture will not be materially increased, as only the same number of arts now used in the construction of gas-coo s will be employed.
In the drawing:Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the invention, as shown applied to a gas-cock and easing now in general use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of a gascock and casing without the screw and Washer.- Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the turning plug and washer.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the body or casing of a gas-cock of the type now in general use. The casing is provided with a ta ered plug seat or bearing 2 having its small end at the top. An interiorly arranged annular counterbored or cut out portion 3 is provided above the upper end of the seat 2, forming an oil groove, which is of sufficient depth, as will be hereinafter described. This groove is greater in diameter than the seat and surrounds the upper end thereof. A tapered plug 4 is arranged to fit snugly within said seat 2, and it is provided with the ordinary thumb piece 5 at the bottom thereof. The upper or small end 6 is reduced in diameter and extends beyond the top of the seat 2, being provided with an exterior annular cut out portion or recess 7, which registers with the cut out portion or annular groove 3, the annular groove 3 in the casing and the annular recess 7 in the upper end of the plug combining to form an annular oil well or channel around the upper end 6 of the plug. The bottom of the out out portion or annular groove 3 is curved downwardly to the plug seat or bearing 2 to a point below the exterior cut out portion 7 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the plug. This annular groove 3 can be made angular if desired without departing from the spirit of my invention. The plug is further provided with a threaded vertical opening 8 which extends from the top of the plug to a point equidistant with or below the bottom of the cut out portion or recess 7, the distance being optional as shown in Fig. 1, the said opening extending below the recess 7. Connecting the annular recess 7 with the threaded opening 8 are a plurality of transverse openings 99, the lower walls of which are in alinement with the bottom of the annular recess 7. While only two of these openings are shown, more may be em ployed without departing from the spirit of my invention. A washer 10 of the ordinary construction, is mounted on and around the upper end of the plug and bears on the top of sure for the annular groove 3. It is prevented from turning by the provision of a flat side wall of its opening engaging a fiat side wall of the cut out ortion or recess 7 formed in the upper enc of the plug. A screw 11 is threaded into the vertical opening 8, and is provided with a large head 12, which extends over and is adapted to bear upon the washer 10, and thereby form a comparatively tight cover for the annular oil well or channel.
From the foregoing, it will be readily apparent that by removing the screw 1 1, oil can be poured into the vertical opening 8, from which the lubricant will, through the opening 99, pass into the annular well or channel and then will gradually feed down between the plug and the seat. Should grease be desired for a lubricant, it will be necessary to remove the washer, then the grease can be applied directly to the annular groove.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a stop cook, the combination with a casing having a seat and provided with a cut out portion or annular groove above the upper end of the seat and greater in diameter than the seat, of a turning plug movably mounted within the seat and provided at its upper end with a cut out portion or annular recess that merges with the said out out portion or groove of the casing to form an annular oil well or channel around the upper end of the plug, a vertical opening located in the upper portion of the plug, passages in the plug which connect the said vertical opening with the said annular recess, and a closure for the vertical opening and annular oil well.
2. In a stop cook, the combination with a casing having a seat and provided above the upper end of the seat with an annular cut out portion or groove, of a turning plug movably mounted within the seat, the upper end thereof extending beyond. the top of theseat, a cut out portion or annular recess formed in the upper end of the plug, said out out portion or recess merging with the cut out portion or groove of the casing to form an annular oil well or channel around the upper end of the plug and communicating with the seat, a threaded opening extending downwardly in the plug from the top, a plurality of transverse passages connecting the said opening with the annular oil well or channel, a washer mounted on the casing and around the upper end of the plug and closing the oil well or channel, and a screw mounted within the vertical opening for securing the cover and plug in their relative positions.
3. In a stop cock, the combination with a casing having a seat and provided with a cut out portion or annular groove above the upper end of the seat and greater in diameter than the seat, of a turning plug movably mounted. Within the seat and provided at its upper end with a cut out portion or annular recess that merges with the said cut out portion or groove of the casing to form an annular oil well or channel around the upper end of the plug, said annular oil well or channel communicating with the upper end of the seat, a washer forming a cover for the oil well or channel and fitted on the upper part of the casing and the upper end of the plug, and a screw for holding the washer in place, said screw engaging the plug.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
