SANDING APPAEATUS FOR TROLLEY-CARS AND THE LIKE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CHARLES SNYDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manayunk, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sanding Apparatus for Trolley-Cars and the Like, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in sanding apparatus for trolley ears and the like, and has for'its object to provide an exceedingly simple and effective arrangement by which the motor- .men may apply sand to the track in front of thp car wheels by the simple operation of a va ve.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.

In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, which represents a portion of a car having my improvement applied thereto, the sand box and delivery tube being in section.

In carrying out my invention as here em bodied, A represents a sand box, which may .be in any desired shape, having a pipe B leading into the lower portion thereof, and also a pipe B leading into the upper portion of sand box which pipes are connected with the valve C, the latter also having connected therewith the pipe D, which leads from the ordinary air reservoir of a trolley car.

In the upper portion of the sand box the delivery pipe E runs downward in front of the wheels of the car, and within the sand box at the point where the delivery pipe enters a compartment is formed by the partition F. Partition F, is curved in form so as to facilitate the gravitating action of the sand and is disposed so that its lower end registers with the inner end of pipe E, and its upper end is spaced from the top of box A, so as to form a constricted sand passage in conjunction with the latter.

In practice, when the motorman desires to apply sand to the track he has only to operate the valve C to cause air to flow from the Specification of Letters Patent.

air tank into the sand box A, which will stir up the sand in the box and force a portion thereof into the port formed by the partition F, from thence it will flow downward through the pipe E and be delivered to the track in front of the wheels. This forcing of the air into the sand box will stir the sand up and prevent it from becoming clogged or packed and deliver it to the tracks in the best condi tion for the purpose intended.

It is to be noted that the sand box is entirely inclosed with the exception of the out let therefrom to the delivery pipe, and thus no water can gain access to the sand box so that the sand will be always in a dry and powdered state, A suitable screw cap G is provided for filling the sand box.

()f course I do not wish to be limited to any particular means of operating the valve C, as this may be done either by hand or suitable foot lever, nor do I wish to be limited to the exact construction here shown as this may be varied within reasonable limits without departing from the spirit of my invention.

For ordinary trolley cars which travel first in one direction and then the other, a sand box and delivery pipe should be placed at each end of the car, one to be used when the car is traveling in one direction and the other when it is traveling in the opposite direction.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is I In a sanding apparatus, a sand box, a delivery pipe leading into one end thereof, a partition secured to said end of the box so as to have its lower end register with said pipe, the top end of the partition terminating be low the top of the box so as to provide a constricted passage in conjunction therewith, a pair of horizontal air pipes leading into the opposite end of the box, said pipes being spaced apart and being arranged so that one is adjacent the top of the box, and the other is adjacent the bottom of the box, and means for supplying compressed air to each of said pipes.
