SAND-DISCHARGING SPOUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 1atent N 0. 734,331, dated July 21, 1903. Application filed May 15, 1903. Serial. No. 157,251. (No model.)
To all whom it may concerm Beit known that I, ALBERT M. HOWERY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Eastbank, in the county of Kanawha and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Sand-Discharging Spout, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in devices for sanding railway-rails, an object being to provide a discharge-spout so constructed as to spread the sand evenly on the whole width of the rails either on curves or straight lines.
I will describe a sand-discharging spout embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.-
Figure 1 isa side elevation of a portion of a locomotive, showing a sand-discharging spout embodying my invention in connection therewith. Fig. 2 is a sectional view-of the spout on the line :20 w of Fig. 3.
is a section on the line 2 z of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the sand-pipe leading from the sand-box 2 on the; locomotive, and on the endjof thepipe 1' is the discharging-spout 3. This spout is funnel-shaped, the larger end being at the outlet and its longitudinally-curved bottom'wall A being substantially fiat, so that the sand may be readily spread out thereon. Formed Fig. 3 is a" section on the line 1 got Fig. 2, and Fig. 4.
struction the sand in passing through the main portions of the channels willtbe somewhat choked or retarded, but upon reaching the widened ends will spread out in thin layers, so that the sand will completely cover "the top of the rail.
While I have shown but three channels in the drawings, it, is obvious that a greater number will be found necessary in wider spouts.
'Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A sand-discharging spout having a plurality of channels in the inner side ofits bottom wall.
2. A sand-discharging spout having channels in the inner side of its bottom wall, thesaid channels communicatingat the inner end, and enlarged or widened at the outer end.
3. A sand-discharging spout having a center channel in its bottom wall, and side channels divergent from said center channel.
4. A device for sanding railway-rails, comprisingaspoutsubstantially of funnel shape, the largerend being atthe outlet, the said spout having a plurality of distributing-channels in the inner side of its bottom wall.
5. The combination with a sand-pipe leading from a sand-box-on a locomotive, of a longitudi'nally-curved discharge-spout having a substantially fiat bottom wall, the said bottom wall being provided with a plurality of distributing-channels.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT HOWERY.
