SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 608,881, dated August 9, 18981. Application filed August 11, 1897. Serial No. 647,896. (No model) To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVA A. LINDLEY, of Oskaloosa, in the county of Mahaska and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Track-Sanding Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a track-sanding ap paratus particularly designed for use in connection with locomotives, but applicable to other motors where an air-blast may be obtaincd.
It consists of certain improvements connected to or formed as a part of the ordinary valve by which an air-blast may be used for discharging the sand when desired without interfering with the ordinary manner of operating the valve.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional elevation of my valve, and Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional elevation taken upon the lines 6 6 of Fig. 1.
One object sought to be accomplished in my invention is to provide a pneumatic sanding device which will not interfere with the use of the valve as an ordinary valve-that is, to permit the discharge of sand by using the valve in the ordinary manner and, in fact, to permit the use of the pneumatic device at the same time that the sand is discharged by moving the valve to uncover the dischargeopening in the ordinary manner.
The valve B is mounted upon the bottom of the sand-box A in the usual manner, which consists in a journal I) projecting through the bottom of the box and attached to a crankarm 13, connected in any suitable manner, to be operated from the cab of the engine. The valve B is, however, constructed in a manner differing somewhat from the ordinary valve. This valve is provided with a passage B extending from the discharge-opening a in the bottom of the sand-box toward the interior of the sandbox and connecting with the side extending passages e,
' The air-blast connection is made through the journal Z) of the valve. This journal is made hollow and is connected by a pipe D and hose D with the aii supply. The passage d connecting with the hollow journal, is curved, so as to join the passage B leading to the discharge-opening. In the same valve a passage cl is shown leading to the top of the valve, by which air-blastconnection may be made to the top of the valve, if desired. One of these connections which is not in use will be closed by a plug, as shown.
The connection to the interiorof the sandbox through which the sand is drawn is shown as consistingof the'side passages 6, leading from the inner end of the passages B down ward to the interior of the sand-box. When it is desired, the valve may be moved even farther, so as to entirely uncover the discharge-opening a, and in this case the valve is used in the ordinary manner and the pneumatic discharge is entirely out off. 7
It will thus be seen that my device may be applied to present locomotives without in any way changing the same and in such a way that the valve may be operated inthe ordinary manner whenever desired. The use of the pneumatic sanding device will result in great economy in the use of the sand, at the same time permitting the liberal use thereof whenever needed.
