Description

N0. 889,994=. PATENTED JUNE 9, 1908.
A. S. WADSWORTH. I I COMBINED WASHBOARD AND CLOTHES POUNDBR.
ABPLIOATION FILED MAY 17, 1907 fM mfar,
WORTH, a citizen of the United States, resid- UNITE ANNA SOPHIA WADSWORIH, OF RIVER FALLS, WISCONSIN.
COMBINED WASHBOARD AND CLOTHES-POUNDER.
Application filed May 17, 1907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANNA SOPHIA WADS- ing at River Falls, in the county of Pierce and State of I/Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined VVashboard and Clothes-Founder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined washboards and clothes pounders, its object being particularly to provide im provements in the construction of the clothes pounding chamber or cup together with improved means for anchoring the same on the washboard.
To this end my invention consists in the features of construction and. combination hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1. is a perspective view of my improved invention, Fig. 2 is a section on line ac es of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the clothes pounding chamber.
As shown in the drawings the washboard comprises the ordinary side bars 2 connected by a corrugated scrubbing plate 3. Secured between the upper ends of the side bars 2 of the washboard is my improved clothes pounding chamber A. This, as shown in the drawings, is of sheet metal bent to form an open top rectangular box or cup and a central depending flange 4. The metal forming the flange 4 is doubled upon itself to consti tute a roll 5 to receive a rod. 6 connecting the side bars 2. The side bars 2 are each formed with a slot 7 through which extends the sides of the flange 4 as illustrated. The clothes pounding chamber A is further anchored in position by means of braces 8 riveted to the outer sides of the chamber at one end and secured to the adjacent sides of the side bars 2. Retaining scrcws9 extend through the side bars and flange.
The clothes pounding chamber is formed in its horizontal walls with openings 10 in connection with which are arranged gravity valves 11. The valves 11 slide upon pins Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 9, 1908.
Serial No. 374,210,
make a tight bottom for the cup I preferably solder between the doubled sheet of metal forming the flange 4.
The washboard may be used in the ordinary manner to scrub the clothes or by seizing the ends 14 of the side bars it can be used as a pounder. When used as a pounder the Water will pass through the valve openings 10.
The important feature of my invention is the manner in which the cup is constructed and anchored in the ends of the side bars 2. The flange 4t and tie rod 6 together with the braces 8 strongly anchors the cup in position and at the same time firmly secures together the side bars 2.
I claim 1. In a device of the class described the combination with side bars, a clothes pounding chamber formed with a central outwardly extending flange, means anchoring said flange between the inner sides of said side bars, and valved openings in said chamber upon opposite sides of said flange.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with side bars, of a clothes pounding chamber of sheet metal bent to form the chamber and a central outwardly extending flange doubled upon itself, the adjacent ends of said side bars being formed with longitudinal slots to receive said flange, and a rod extending through the doubled end of said flange and connecting said side bars.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with side bars, of a clothes pounding chamber provided with an outwardly extending central flange doubled upon itself and anchored in the adjacent ends of said side bars, a rod extending through the doubled end of said flange and said side bars, and braces connecting the adjacent sides of said chamber and. side bars.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
