Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented June 2, 1908.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM B. SHOTWELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residin` at Petersburg, in the county of Boone and tate of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Im rovements in Fence-Clamps, of which the fo owing is a specification.
This invention is an improved fence clamp, and it consists in theconstruction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,*Figure 1 structed in accordance with this invention.
is a perspective view of a fence clamp con- "1.5v
F 2'is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3
is a side elevation of the same showing the clamp open. y V
The two members 1 and 2 of the clamp are connected together at one end by a hinge 3. The member 1 is provided with a pluralit of keepers 4, here shown as bolts extending therethrough and roject'mg from one side thereof, which I will having slots'5 in the said projecting ends. The member 2 isprovided with openings 6",
through which the said slotted ends of the keepers extend whenthe said members 1 and 2 are closed together, on opposite sides of the fence wires, to clamp the fence wires between them. Said member 2 is provided on its outer side with reinforce stri s 7 which are preferably made of sheet or p ate metal, and on one of said reinforce stri s at points opposite the slotted ends of the lgeepers are guides 8 in which arelwedge-shaped keys 9. VSaid term the inner side, and
wedge-sha ed keys may be forced into the slots 5 of t e bolts to lock the members 1, 2 of the clamp on opposite sides of the fence wires or fabric, as will be understood. The said'keys are connected together by a bar 10 which has parallel arms 11 that operate in staples or other suitable guidingl devices 12'. The said bar revente loss of any of the keys, the arms 11 t ereof having their ends turned at right angles, as at 13, to form stops which by coaction with the sta les 12 prevent the said arms from being withdrawn from said sta les.
aving thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:-
` A fence clam comprising a pair of members one provi ed with openings and the other provided with keepers to extend through such openin s and having slots, a reinforce strip on the ast mentioned member having guides, Wedge shaped keys in such guide to engage the slots of the keepers to clamp said members together, guiding devices on the last mentioned member and arod connecting said keys` together, having arms operating in said guidedevices and further provided with stops to coact on'the said guidin devices to prevent said arms from being with raWn.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM B. SHOTWELL. Witnesses:
