Letters Patent No. 88,966, dated April 13, 1869.
INIPROVEMENT IN STAIR-RODS.
'To all whom it may concern.-
description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this speciiication, in which'drawing- Figure l represents a sectional plan of this invention,
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the locking-sleeve,
or cap. 4
Figure 4 is a sectional plan of amodication thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in the arrangement of a locking-sleeve, or cap, fitting on the end of a stair-rod, provided with a slot, in combination with a screw, which is secured in the stairs, and the end of which passes into a slot, or hole in the end of the stairfrod, in such a manner that, by securing two screws in the stairs, at the proper distance apart, and by adjusting the ends of the stair-rod on said screws, and introducing the slotted sleeves, or caps, the stair-rod is securely held in position, and by removing the slotted sleeves, or caps, the stair-rod can be taken oli" without difficulty.
A represents a stair-rod, made of wood or any other suitable material, in any desirable form or shape.
. The ends of this stair-rod are, by preference, made round, and they are provided with holes, or slots, a, to admit theheadsof the screws b.
On theends of the s'tair-rodare fitted the caps, or
sleeves B, which are provided with slots c, large enough to straddle the shanks of the screws.
If'the screws are secured in the stails as shown at tig. 1, at the proper distance apart, and the stair-rod is placed on them, ,sothat the holes, or slots a catch over said screws,'the stair-rod is readily secured in position by means of the sleeves, or caps B, the slots of which straddle the shanks of the.screws, and retain the rod in position.
The slots in the sleeves, or caps B are, by preference, made L-shaped, as shown in fig. 3, so that said sleeves, after they have been adjusted on the ends ofthe rod, can be turned to bring the shanks of the screws into the rectangular portions of the slots, and thereby the sleeves, 'orcaps are prevented from getting accidentally displaced. i
It is obvious that the sleeves, or caps' can be ornamented in any desirable manner, and that, by these means, a fastening for stair-rods is obtained, which is not only ornamental, but which can also'be operated with great ease and convenience.-
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 4 The slotted sleeves, or caps B, in combination with the slotted stair-rod A, and the screw b, constructed and arranged as shown and described.
