Description

UNITED, sTATEs PATENT oEErcE. y
Y LINUS TERRY FURNAS, LIMA, OHIO.
K/ DRESS-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed August 28, 1907. Serial No. 390,464.
,To all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that I, LINUS TERRY FURNAS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lima, in the county vof Allen and State of Ohio, have invented a new al1/dA useful Improvement in Dress-Forms, of which the folowing is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of the invention is to rovide an article of female apparel adapte to be Worn beneath the skirts and to exte'nd partially around the fi ure,l *being supported from the waist, and t e object ofthe article is to provide means for rectlf ing deficiencies in the human figure, particularly at the hips and back, and also to provide an article'of the character described adaptable to all conditions and to all persons.
Itis another purpose of the invention to provide an article of the character mentioned that can be expeditiously and conveniently adjusted in any way desired, or that the figure may require. If the hips are small, a
pnper fullness can be directed to the sides, an
should the back be at, the fulness can be directed to that point, and itis also a purpose of the invention to soconstruct the article that the members 'are graduated` in such manner that when adjusted and the article worn, its presence cannot be detected i ing drawing washable fabric.
and further, to so construct the article that it can be stretched at and washed without removing any of its elements.
.The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanys forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures.
Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the article as it appearsu on the erson; Fig. 2 is an inner face View o the a .justed 'article laid fiat; Fig.l 3 is an outer 4face View of the article laid perfectly flat, none of its members having .been adjusted; Fig. 4 is an inner face View of She article, its members being in the same condition as shown in Fig. 3; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section through the article.
The article in its entirety is made of fabric of any suitable description, preferably a The body portion A ofthe article is of suilicient length after being adjusted to partially. encircle the waist of the wearer and it is provided with a straight '20a,'and 20,1, and 19a, and 191.v i -In adjusting the form to the igurepthe upper edge 10, and a convexed lower edge 11, as is best'shown in Figje, and at the upper portion of the body 'at each end, tie strings 11`a are secured which are adapted to be brought together at the front of the person and suitably connected, as is shown at 12 in Fi 1. At the bottom edge of the body A, a ounce B is secured extending from end to end of the said body section, and having practically the same general contour.
In addition to the lower or edge flounce B, a series of overlapping body flounces are provided these body iiounces extend also from end to end of the body and have their lower edges convexed, the lower edge of the upper fiounce being less convexed than the corres ending edges of other lounces. These bo y flounces commencing from the top, are designated respectively as B', B2, B3, B4, and B5. In addition to these body iiounces just named that extend from end to end of the body A, an auxiliary and shorter ilounce BG is provided, which is partially covered by the iounce B5, and rests upon the flounce B.
The auxiliary flounce B6 extends an equal distance from the center .of the article and terminates some distance from the ends thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. Where the various body iiounces connect, with the body A, a hein is formed at their upper edge; these hems commencing from the top of the article are designated respectively as 14', 15, 16, 17, 18, and 19, and the hem for the short or auxiliary flounce B6 is designated as 20. The flounces are all located upon the outer face of the body and at the inner face of the body openings h21 and 22 are located at each side of the center, being produced in the aforesaid heins, and the said openings 21 and 22 for all of the hems are in vertical alinement, as is shown clearly in Fig. 4. TWO tapes lor draw strings are employed for each hem, and they are secured in any suitable or a proved manner at the outer end portions ci) the hems, as is shown at 23 in Fig. 4, and the inner or free ends of these draw strings or tapes -are made to pass out at the rear of the article through the o enings 21 and 22 in the respective hems. are designated as follows: Those for the hem 14, asr14a, and 14h, those for the hein 15, as 15a and 15b, and the remaining sets of free ends of said draw strings are designated 17h, is, isb,l
respectively as 16a, 16h, 17a,
T 1e draw strings or tapesv .at such time all t mating strings are drawn up and tied as may be required, and the operation will .be hereinafter more particularly set forth. When the article has been adjusted to be fitted to the figure the back of the article will have the shirring eect shown at C in Fig. 2, While the front of the article will have the plaited effect shown at C in Fig. 1, and it may be here remarked that a plait 24 is formed in each iiounce in its central portion transversely on the iiounce so as to insure the iiounce having a segmental sha e when worn, and also to insure the artic e tting snugly to theiigure. The end portions of the completed article are quite thin and the lower edge of the edge iiounce B is also `quite thin since this ,flounce is of a single thickness and is not covered by any of the others.
It is evident that the construction of the article admits of a flounce being thrown in every possible direction that any figure may need; 1t can be made light in the back and heavy on the sides, or it may be made heavy on the back and light on the sides, or it can.
be made medium at the back and the sides. By releasing the tapes a little the flounces can be thrownlpractically over the hips, or by' -be easily and quickly corrected .by means of the described article. A
It is also a parent that the article is tapered off witli practically a feather edge both at the sides and at the bottom whereby the outline of the article'is not visible, a defect common to most all such articles of aparel; furthermore it is evident that it can be made perfectly lat for washing and that e tapes remain in position so that all that is necessary is to draw the tapes up and tie them, whereupon the article is read to be worn again. Having, thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent,- l 1. 'As an improved article ofmanufacture, an adjustable dress form constructed wholly of a pliable material and consisting of a body section, and a series of over-lying ounces secured on the face of the body section, eitch Ilounce at this point of engagement with the body beiri provided with a hem, and draw strings witiliin the hems secured at their o uter ends, their free ends being passed out through the body at its central portion as described. 2. As an improved article of manufacture,
an adjustable dress form constructed wholly outer face of the body shaped correspondingly to the body and attached thereto at their u per edges by means of hems, and pairs cip tapes in each hem, said tapes being secured to the bod7 at their outer ends, their inner ends being assed loosely out through the backof the Body rendering the article adjustable to any desired thickness or form, as described.
3. A dres's form 'constructed of fabric and consisting ofa body section of a series of adjustable over-lying flounces of corres ending shape to that ofthe body secured to t e outer face of the body and'extending from end to end, and a pair of drawstrings in each flounce mainly concealed by the iiounce and having their outer ends fast at the outer ends of the' body and ltheir inner ends loosely passed through the back of the body at its central portion. Y' 4.A A dress'form constructed of fabric and consisting of a body section of a proximately segmental shape, a series o over-lying iiounces of corresponding shape to that of the body secured at then` upper edges to the outer face of the body, extending from end l to end, with the exception of a lower flounce which' extends a short distance each side of the center of the body, a single flounce at the lower edge of the body also extending from end to end, and a pair of draw strings in each iloun'ce, which stringsl are secured at their outer endsto the outer end portions of the body, their vinner ends being passed out through the back central portion of the body.
5. A dress form, comprising a body, a plurality of ilounces having hems at their upper edges and secured at said edges upon the outer face of the-body one below the other, and draw strings in the hems of the flounces. .A
6. A dress forni, comprising a plurality of connected and overlying lounces of pliable material, and a pair of draw strings for each q ,iiounce, each string being secured at one end v1n the lounce and having its other end ex tending out through the lounce.
In testimony whereof I have signed my naine to this speciiic'ation in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.l A
