To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OVID P. WELDING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sioux City, in the county of Woodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in a Combination Buckle and Thill Carrier, of which the following is specification.

This invention relates to a combined thill carrier and buckle designed to be carried by a harness and to be sold with the harness, thus reducing the number of parts and also affording a quick and improved manner of securing thills and the girth strap.

The invention consists also of the novel features of construction hereinafter fully de scribed, pointed out in the claims and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which,

In constructing the device I bend a piece of Wire, upon itself forming a bail A and adj acent the bow portion of this bail the said wire is bent upon itself to form two parallel eyes A one upon each side member of the bail. These eyes are connected together by a transverse bar A formed of a piece of Wire similar to that employed in making the bail, and which is bent to engage the eyes. The bow portion of the bail forms in combination with a tongue A pivotally carried by the bar A a buckle. The free end portions of the wire forming the bail A, diverge and are curved outwardly and upwardly and upon the bail is secured a thin metal plate B, the sides of which are cut and crimped around the curved side members of the bail, thus forming a curved holder for the thill. with this holder and lock the thill in engagement with it, I provide a second bail C also of wire, the free ends of which are bent to form eyes C which also engage the eyes A thus pivotally connecting the two bails together and in reverse position with respect to each other. The ball C is bent transversely and carries a plate D formed of metal the sides of which are crimped or bent around the side members of the bail C, A strap E is carried by the bow ortion of the bail C and is designed to be uckled to the girth strap and a. strap F is carried by the buckle above referred to and is intended to be connected to a suitable strap from the harness saddle.

To cooperate It will be obvious that when the strap E is unbuckled the plate D can be swung up- Wardly and outwardly permittin the thill to be readily removed from the ho der formed by the two bails and the two plates, and when the strap E is buckled to the girth or any strap substituted therefor, the bail C will be drawn toward the bail A and the thill locked in place. This construction also permits the device to be employed in connection with thills of different diameters.

In connection with large wagons and for heavy loads the device may be made of heavy metal and it will also be obvious that the bail C and plate D may, if desired, be formed in one piece and also that the bails A and C may be pivotally connected or hinged to each other in a number of different ways without changing the invention or affecting the operation of the device.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the kind described comprising 0 positely arranged bails, one of said bails aving eyes formed upon its side members, the ends of the other bail being in engagement with said eyes, a tongue carried by one of said bails and a-strap secured to the other bail, the tongue projecting upwardly and the strap extending downwardly, as and for the pur ose set forth.

2. A thil holder comprising two oppositely arranged bails, one of said bails having eyes formed upon its side members adjacent its bow portion, the free ends of the other bail engaging said eyes, metal plates carried by said bails and bent to inclose a thill, and means for connecting straps to the bow portions of each of said bails.

3. A device of the kind described consisting of a wire bail, the side members of the bail being bent adjacent its bow portion to form eyes, a bar connecting said eyes, a tongue carried by said bar and cooperating with the bow portion of the bail to form a buckle, a second bail having its free ends in engagement with the eyes of the first mentioned bail, and suitable straps connected to each bail, as and for the purpose set forth.
