Description

H. UPDEGRAPH. HARNESS HOOK. APPLICATION FILED FEB. 21 r916 Patented Dec. 12, 19l6.
TINTFU @TATF% FAEFT TQ.
HARRY UPDEGRAPH, OF HOOPESTON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 GEORGE W. DULEY, OF HOOPESION, ILLINOIS.
HARNESS-HOOK.
Application filed February 21, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HARRY UPDEGRAPH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoopeston, in the county of Vermilion, State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Harness-Hook; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved hook, adapted for use in connection with different parts of harness and the like.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved hook, which is simple, efiicient and practical in construction, and may be manufactured for a small cost and sold very reasonable.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hook of this design which may be readily substituted for the ordinary snap hook, or used in place of the usual trace tug hook to the hames, or in place of the trace hook to the swingle tree, or substituted for any other hook, where it may be suitably applied.
ln practical fields the details of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a View in perspective showing the improved hook constructed in accordance with the invention, and applied as a connector between the trace and the hames. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the hook as applied for connecting a trace to a swingle-tree. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the first step in disconnecting a ring from the hook. Fig. 4 is a plan view showing the second step for disconnecting the ring. Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View. Fig. 6 is a cross sectional view.
Referring more especially tothe drawings, 1 designates a portion of a hame, to which the hook 3 (which is provided with a loop 4) is attached by means of the connections 6. The hoolc 3 comprises a body 7, which tapers from the loop .4 toward and Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 12, 1916..
Serial No. 79,735.
terminates in an overhanging or goose-neck shaped hook 8, which is designed to be engaged by the ring 9 of one end of a trace, as shown in Fig. 1, or carried by a swingletree as in Fig. 2. Riveted at 10 to the body of the hook is a plate 11, the side edge portions of which have flanges 12 arranged in parallelism and projecting laterally from the plate. These flanges act as guards to the overhanging hook, and have their edges 13 substantially flush with the edge 14 of said hook, that is, in side elevation. In plan view it is to be observed that said hook is disposed centrally or at equal spaced intervals between said flanges, said spaces 15 being of such width, as to permit the ring, when disposed as in Figs. 8 and 4, to be disconnected from the hook. The flanges are provided with extension lugs 16, which. prevent the ring from becoming twisted or so positioned as to allow it to become accidentally disconnected when jolted. 'lo disconnect the ring, the same is moved from its plan viewposition, so that it engages the shoulder 17, or rather the end 17 of the plate, and one side of the hook at 18, as shown in Fig. 3, and then a further turn or twist is imparted to the ring until it assumes approximately the position shown in Fig. 4, after which the ring may be moved out to one of the spaces between the hook and said flanges.
The invention having been set forth, what is claimed as new and useful is In a device as set forth, the combination of a shank member having a loop at one end and a hook at the other end at right angles to the loop, and a U-shaped plate on the shank, of means for securing the plate on the shank, said plate having laterally extending parallel side flanges spaced apart upon opposite sides of the extremity of the hook and having their edges substantially flush with the outer edge of the hook and constituting guard elements to prevent a ring on the hook against movement toward the loop, the corresponding lateral end edges of the side flanges adjacent the hook having lugs constituting auxiliary guard elements to prevent outward movement of the ring,
said main guard elements and the auxiliary name to this specification in the presence of gualid elements and the extremity of the two subscribing Witnesses. hoe being in such relations as to prevent detachment of the ring Without disposing HARRY UPDEGRAPH' the same at right angles to the hook and to Witnesses: one side thereof. H. G. CARR,
In testimony whereof I have signed my ROBERT R. RODMAR.
