DANIEL DRAWBAUGH, OF OAMP HILL, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER OR BLIND OPERATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1908.
Application filed September 30, 1907. Serial No. 395,209.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL DRAWBAUGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camp Hill, in the county of Cumberland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter or Blind Operating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My resent invention relates to improvements 1n shutter or blind operators, and has special reference to a new and im rovedcombination, which is easily attache in operable position upon shutters or blinds and the window frame, so that the opening or closing of the shutter or blind, is entirely controlled from the interior of the house, without the necessity of opening the window sash or screen. To this end, I mount in the window frame a revoluble shaft having upon its inner end a crank and spring actuated lock, while upon its outer end in a flat worm gear, which meshes with a segmental gear, which is either separate or integral with the hinge upon the shutter or blind. By simply revolving the shaft the shutter or blind is operated, and held by the locking device in any desired position.
To clearly illustrate my invention, attention is invited to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a section through a casing and shutter, the operator, being in the position it assumes when the shutter is closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the shutter open. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the worm gear. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the shutter and frame, with the device attached. Fig. 5 is a similar view with the segmental gear a portion of the shut ters hinge. Fig. 6 is a detail lan view of the gear hinge, and Fig. 7 is a etail view of the inner casing and end of the shaft, illustrating the locking device.
Referring to the drawings :A designates the window frame casing, and B, the shutter 01' blind. Secured to the shutter by means of the plate 1, is the segmental gear 2, which as shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, is separatefrom the hinge C, while as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the ferrule 3, is added to form the shutters portion of the lower hinge. The segmental gear 2 and the plate 1, are formed integral, the bracing web 4, having a shouldered por tion 5, to abut against the outer face of the shutter, and thus assist in holding-the gear bearing sleeve 7, the shaft 8, having its inner end in contact with the sleeve 6, while the securing boss 9, of the disk or plate 10, carried by the outer end of the shaft, is journaled in the bearing sleeve 7. Upon the outer face of the plate 10, isformed the volute ridges 11, which are preferably two in number. Each start at opposite points a, equidistant from the center of the plate, the outer ends terminating at the periphery of the plate at opposite sides as at b and 0, respectively. These volute worms or ridges are-adapted to engage the teeth of the segmental gear, and I have found by experience that the terminal of each worm or ridge must be tapered, in order that the device work without binding and breaking the gear teeth.
Mounted upon the inner end of the shaft, within the casing 12, is a locking ratchet wheel 13, whose teeth 14, are rounded, so that as the shaft is revolved through the medium of the handle 15, the spring actuated locking wheel 16, can. conform to the shape of the teeth, but when the shaft is halted, will engage the wheel and hold the shaft against revolving, thus holding the shutter in the desired position. The end 17, of the shaft is square, and the portion 18, of the handle is rovided with a squared bore, for the receptlon of the portion 17, of the shaft, the handle when out of use assuming the position shown in Fig. 1, the door 19, of t e casing being closed. When in use, the handle assumes the position shown in Fig. 2.
a disk upon the outer end, and a series of 2. In a shutter or blind operator, the combination With a shutter or blind and a Window casing, of a shaft journaled in the casing, a fiat disk parallel and flush With the outer face of the casing and carried upon the outer end of the shaft, volute Worms formed upon the outer face of the disk, a gear Wheel carried upon the inner end of the shaft, means for engaging the gear to lock the shaft, means mounted upon the inner end of the shaft for revolving the shaft, and a segmental gear carried by the shutter or blind and having its teeth engaged by the volute worms.
3. In combination with a shutter or blind carrying a plate, a segmental gear formed integral with the plate and connected with a shouldered Web, of a Window casing, a shaft revolubly journaled therein, means upon the inner end of shaft for revolving the same, means for locking the shaft against movement, a disk upon the outer end of the shaft flush and parallel with the Window casing, and a series of volute Worms upon the outer face of the disk and in engagement With the gear.
In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
DANIEL DRAWBAUGH.
