SECTIONAL WATER-TUBE STEAM-BOILER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY DEL MAR, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sectional Water-Tube Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in sectional water tube steam boilers having side headers and series of cross tubes.
As these boilers are usually made, they can be of any moderate length, as they are made up of single sections. My invention is in tended to make such boilers in a series of sections and provide combustion chambers between the sections, and arrange in connection with these chambers, or separately, a series of baffles, so that the hot gases are directed between the tubes of the several sections in a way to utilize all the heat for the purpose of making steam. Thus I provide an economical steamer, and also a boiler which can be made of large capacity.
To these ends my invention consists of a cross tube boiler, the construction and arrangement of which will be hereinafter described and the novel features claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of the boiler. Fig. 2 is a cross section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of a slightly modified form of boiler, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of another modification.
The boiler shown has side headers 10 at the bottom, connecting by diagonally arranged cross water tubes 11 with the upper headers 12, which also connect by tubes 13 with the steam drum 141. This connects by downflow tubes 15 with the mud drums 16, which are connected together by tubes 17. The above represents a good form of water tube steam boiler, but my invention applies to any boiler of this general type.
The boiler has a fire box 18, at the back of which is a baffle 19 extending up nearly to the horizontal baffle 20 which extends from the steam drum 1 1 to the boiler sides. A similar baflie 19 is arranged back of the baf fle 19 and extends up to the baffle 20. The baffles 19 and 19 thus form a vertical combustion chamber 19 between them, giving the hot gases a chance for further combus- Specification'of Letters Patent.

tion, and therefore promoting higher efficiency. The baflie 19 has a passage 2O near the bottom, for hot gases, and the smoke passes out of the rear compartment through the opening 21 which is formed behind the baffle or plate 21*. Thus the gases pass first between the first section or bank of tubes 11, next to the chamber between the walls 19 and 19*, where recombustion occurs, next between the second bank of tubes 11, and finally out.
In Figs. 3 and 4 the same principle obtains, but the arrangement is slightly different. The combustion chamber is dispensed with, and a baffle 23 separates the two banks of tubes 11, while deflecting walls 24 are arranged at the ends. In Fig. 3 the gases pass over the wall 23 and baffle 23 and thence down and out of the stack 27. course of gases is reversed; they are sent to the rear by the horizontal deflector 22, thence pass upward and forward over the baffle 23, thence downward and forward beneath the front deflector 2 1 to the chamber or flue 26, and thence to the stack 27 at the front. These several views illustrate the fact that the construction of the boiler proper is immaterial, that the essential thing is to baffle the gases either with or without a recombustion chamber and send them in a circuitous course among the several tubes of any good type of cross tube boiler, which is thus made up of sections, and any desired number of sections can be used so as to utilize all the heat of the gases of combustion.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A cross tube sectional water tube steam boiler, having opposed upper and lower side headers forming the boiler sides, diagonally opposed cross tubes connecting the upper and lower headers on opposite sides, said tubes being arranged in compartments separated by baifles and with the baffles arranged so as to send the products of combustion upward through one compartment, downward through the next, and so on through the several compartments.
2. A cross tube sectional water tube steam boiler, having opposed headers with diagonally opposed cross tubes connecting the opposite headers, the tubeseries being grouped in separate compartments and the compartments arranged end to end, baffles separating In Fig. 4 the the several compartments and having openings therethrough for the products of combustion, said openings being out of alinement, a fire boX below one end compartment, and a smoke vent from one of the end compartments.
3. A cross tube sectional water tube steam boiler, comprising a steam drum, mud drums connected with the steam drum, upper and lower opposed headers, the upper headers connecting with the steam drum and the lower headers with the mud drums, diagonally opposed cross tubes grouped in separate compartments and connecting the upper and lower opposed headers, tubes connecting the upper headers with the steam drum, a horizontal baffle above the last mentioned tubes, and openings out of alinernent connecting the several compartments of the boiler whereby the hot gases travel up and down through the said compartments and among the cross tubes.
