To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, NATHANIEL W. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers, of
which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in that class of steam-boilers known in the trade as Babcock 8: Wilcox boilers.
According to my present invention, in place of em ploying a horizontal steam-drum arranged over and in a line with the sectional tubes, as is the general practice in constructing boilers of this class, I employa horizontal steam-drum extending transversely across the ends of two or more sections. The tubes arein two series, one inclined and the other horizontal. The end castings of the inclined series at the back end are connected at the bottom to a muddrum, and at the top by tubes to the under side of the steam-drum. The end castings at the front are connected to one end of a horizontal series of tubes which form the top of 2 the furnace and flue spaces. The other ends of this horizontal series are connected to the side of the steam-drum. The steam-drum is constructed with asteam-dome. The horizontal series of tubes supports a non-conducting 0 cover formed in sections capable of removal to give ready access to the sectional tubes.
The following is a description of what I consider the best means of carrying out the invention. v

Z is an inclined partition extending across the flue-space Z for the purpose of deflecting the heat and products of combustion. This partition Z is formed of brick-work resting on an inclined frame or support, and extends from 7 5 the side of the drum A to the upper side of the inclined tubes B.

Modifications may be made in many. of the 85 details.
I have shown two partitions extending across the entire nest of tubes, compelling the hot gaseous products of combustion from the fire to traverse across the series of tubes upward, o downward, and again upward.
The water-level in the entire apparatus may vary within wide limits.
