UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARL FRIEDRICH EBEL, O F SINGEN, GERMANY.
STIRRUP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL FRIEDRICH EBEL, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Singen, Durlach district, Baden, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stirrup of the self-opening type, which is shown on the accompanying drawing in Figures 1 & 2 in an elevation and sectional plan respectively.
The stirrup comprises two equal members a, a which are hingedly connected by a pivot 11 so as to form, when in position of use, the base or tread a. Each member possesses a separate stirrup leather or strap 0, 0 so as to be able to move independently from each other. In order to keep the members in the normal position of use, the pivot 11 is surrounded by a spring d which has on both ends extensions to act on the lower side of both members.

stirrup, being released from the pressure of the foot on its base or tread, opens on account of thefoot pressing now on the upper part ofthe stirrup whereby the action of the spring is overcome.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s:
A stirrup, comprising in combination two equal stirrup members, a pivot to hingedly connect said members at their base, a spring on said pivot having on both ends extensions to act on the lower side of both members so as to keep them in the normal position of use, and means at the upper end of each member for engagement with a stirrup leather, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto'set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
