FRANK W. SICKLES, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO UNDERWOOD TYPE- WRITER COMPANY. OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY;
TYPE-WRITIN G MACHINE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented a 19, 1908.
Application filed December 7, 1907. Serial No. 405,508.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. SICKLES, a
citizen of the United States, residing in Hartford, in thecounty of Hartford and State of Oonnecticut,.have invented certain new and useful' Improvements in Type-Writing. Machines, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to revoluble platens of typewriting machines, and its object is to provide simple, inexpensive and efficient. means for applying and releasing the presshowing the pressure rolls released from the platen. Fig. 4 isthe same as Fig. 3, but showing the pressure rolls against the platen. Fig. 5 is a detailshowing the pressure-roll spring cammed and locked away from the roll-carrying arms. i
The platen 1 is mounted on an axle 2,
'journaled in a frame comprising ends 3, 4. A
supporting rod or brace 5 is attachedat its ends'to said ends 3, 4. On this support arefixed brackets 6, 7, provided with bearings in which a rock-shaft 8 is journaled. The said' rock-shaft is provided with a crank arm 9, which is connected by link 10 to a key 11.
On the brackets 6, 7 are secured spring-fim' gers 12, 13, their free ends being provided with heads or. collars 14, 15. Elbow levers .or arms, arranged in pairs, are fulcrumed on -'rod 5, and comprise horizontal arms 16, 17,
hubs 18', 1 9, and endent arms 20, 21. The lower ends of the atter are formed with cams 22, on which the springs 12-, 13, bear.
' When the key 11 is depressed, Fig. 2, the arm 24 is elevated and with it the link 10, the shaft 8 is rocked, and the cams 26, 27, secured to .the shaft, are caused to bear down against the heads 14,15, and the free ends of the springs 12, 13 are forced away from the members 20,21 thus permitting the arms 16, 17 to drop and release the pressure rolls from the platen. The springs are automatically engagement of the flattened ends 28 of the cams 26, 27 with the collars 14, 15. When the key is raised and the rock-shaft rotated in reverse direction, the cams 26, 27 will be disengaged from the springs 14, 15, and the latter will force the members 20, 21 apart, and thusbring the rolls into contact. with the platen. v
Having thus described my invention, I claim: v
1. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen andpressure rolls, of pairs of pivoted arms carrying said rolls, said arms having members provided with cam surfaces, 9. spring bearing upon the cam surfaces of each of said pairs of arms, to press the rolls against the platen, and arms or cams attached to a rock-shaft operated by a key to en age said springs to release the arms and rol s.
' 2. In a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and pressure rolls, of pairs of pivoted arms carrying said rolls, said arms having members provided with cam surfaces, a spring bearing upon the cam surfaces of each of said pairs of arms, to press the rolls'.
against the platen, and arms or cams attached to a rock-shaft operated by a key to en age said springs to release the arms and rolIs; and means whereby said cams may look thesprings in roll-releasing positions.
3. In a ty ewriting machine, the combination with a p aten and pressure rolls, of a support, arms pivoted on said support and extending in opposite directions, said arms having cam surfaces, springs'supported on brackets to engage said cam surfaces, a rockshaft, arms or cams secured to said rock shaft, and means toturn the rock-shaft to cause its arms or cams to bear against said springs and ermit said arms to drop and re lease the rol s from the platen.
4. In a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolub e platen and a platen frame, of front and rear rolls running upon the platen, and pluralities of sets of arms carrying said rolls, said arms being fulorumed upon a rod which extends along the platen, the arms in each set having pendent levers adjacent to eachother, a spring to bear upon the levers in eachpair to force the same apart and thereby press the rolls against the platen, and means to lock the springssimultaneously in roll-releasing positions. I
5. In a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolub e platen and a platen frame, of rolls running upon the platen and frame,
means being provi in roll-releasing positions.
6. In a typewriti and a platen offront and rear rolls running upon and pluralities of sets of arms d rolls, said arms being fulcrurned which extends along the platen,
the platen, carrying sai upon a rod the arms in each set having pend adjacent to each other, and a spring to bear upon the levers in each pair to force the same a art and thereby presstherolls against the I aten; means gbeing provided for releasingi theleyers fromithe control of the springs, sai
releasing means comprising a key-operate ded for locking the springs I p machine, the combina-' tion with a revolub e platen ent levers 1 royectrons to engage the sprin s and press t em away from the levers. 7. n a typewriting machine, tion witha revolub e platen and a platen frame, of front and rear rolls running upon the platen and vpluralities of sets of arms carrying said rolls, said arms being fulcrumed upon airo which extends along the platen, ,the arms in each. set having'pendent levers adjacent to each other, and a spring to bear upon the levers in each pair to force ,the same apart and thereby press the rolls against the platen; and a key-operated rock-shaft having rojections to engage the springs and press them away rock-shaft having from th levers; said projections bein formed with means to lock the springs in ro l-releasing positions.
