PLATEN-SHIFTING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 773,217, dated October 25, 1904.

To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, CARL JULIUS 'MoHNs, mechanical engineer, residing at Ohemnitz, Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented 5 certain new and useful Improvements in Platen-Shifting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
1n type-writers with visible print where the types strike against the front of the paper- IO roller the latter has to be suitably raised in vertical direction for the purpose of shifting the letters. The paper-roller is mounted in a frame, with the lower bar or bars of which a roller is caused to engage, and thereby lift 5 the whole system. This roller is raised by the shift-key.
The subject of the present invention is a form of journal-bearing for the lifting-roller by which it is possible that two shift-keys 20 can be arranged one on each side of the machine, so that the roller can be lifted'by each shift-key independently of the other and at the same time an exact printing of the upper letters of the type is afforded.
The invention is represented in the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a type-Writer to which the invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a plan of the lifting mechanism. Fig. 3 is a front 3 elevation, partly in section, of Fig. 1.

To the levers and 7c are attached the upper ends of the rods Z, which latter are in turn operated by the shift-keys m on both sides of the machine, so that by pressing one shift-key the corresponding forked arm or lever t' or it is raised, and thereby with the help of the roller 9 contacting With thebar 0 the paperroller frame is raised or moved in vertical direction.
In order that the paper-roller a may be raised in its carriage every time in correct horizontal position, a spindle 0, pivoted in bearings on the paper-carriage frame and behind the paper-roller, is fitted with forwardlyextending arms p, the extremities of said arms grasping around pins q, attached to the bearings 15.
In order to diminish as much as possible the Work necessary for raising the paper-roller, springs n are arranged in Well-known manner to act upon the forked arms and it in such a manner that they tend to press the roller g against the bar 0. By means of the springs 12 the Weight of the paper roller is thus practically neutralized or balanced, so that when the shift-keys are operated there is only a relatively small expenditure of force necessary.
By the fact that the fork-arms z'and it have open-ended slots the effect is attained that the roller g is constantly held securely and, on the other hand, can be set in action by each individual forked arm independently of the other.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be operated, I declare that What I claim is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination with the main frame of the machine, a paper-carriage mounted thereon, a platen-roller carried by said paper-carriage and aframe for said platen-roller, of inwardlyextending arms pivoted to said main frame, a roller journaled in the inner ends of said arms and means connected to said arms for elevating said roller, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described the l on the main frame, arms pivoted near their combination with the main frame of the machine, a paper-carriage mounted thereon, a platen-roller carried by said paper-carriage and a frame for said. platen-roller, of inwardlyextending arms pivoted to said main frame, and having their inner ends overlapping, slots in said inner ends,a roller jonrnaled in said slots and engaging the frame of said platen-roller and means connected to said arms for elevating the said roller, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described the combination with the main frame of the machine, a paper-carriage mounted thereon, a platen-roller carried by said paper-carriage and being capable of a vertical movement therein, and a bar secured to said roller and extending parallel thereto, of inwardly-extending arms pivoted to the main frame, a roller journaled in the inner ends of said arms and means connected to said arms for elevating said roller, substantially as described.

In a device of the class described, the combination with the main frame, a papercarriage mounted thereon, a platen-roller and a frame for said platen-roller, of projections centers to said projections, a roller journaled in the inner ends of said arms, links eonnect ing the outer ends of said arms to the shiftkeys and springs secured to the outer ends of said arms and tending to depress the same, substantially as described.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with the main frame of the machine, the paper-carriage, the platen-roller, a frame for said platen-roller inwardly-extending arms pivoted to the main frame, a roller journaled in the inner ends of said arms and engaging the frame of said platen-roller and means connected to said. arms for elevating said roller, of a shaft jonrnaled in said paper carriage, and arms rigidly secured to said shaft at one end and engaging said platenroller at their opposite ends, substantially as described.
