TYPE -W'RITIN G MACHINE Specification of Lettere Patent.
Fatented April 20, 1909.
Application filed October 17, 1907. Serial No. 397,770.

Bc it known that i, W iLLiAM i". HELMOND,
'a citizen ol" the United States, residing in Hart-lord, in the county of Hartford and f State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful [niproveinents in Type- Writinrbr Machines, of which the following is a speeii'ieation.
This invention relates to the paper feeding uv to ineans for controlling the pressure rolls that run upon the usual cylindrical platen.
llleZtDS l'or releasingr the rolls, and also for holding thein released or locked away-troni the platen during the introduction and adjustment ol the paper sheets.
1;. lin the accoin anying drawings, `Figure 1v is a front view o a platen traine of an Underwood front-strike writing machine. is a perspective View illustrating the mounting of the rolls and releasahle springs therey "f for. rig. 3 is an end view of the paper.
guiding devices, showing the pressure rolls Iy released and locked away freni the platen. rig. 4 is a View siiniiar to r ig, 3, hut showing the parts in normal positions.
:zo i ln said niacliine the types usually strike i upon the front side of a platen 1, which is l revoluhly iounted hy means of an axle 2 in the ends 3 of a platen frame, said ends rigidly i Sets of front and y connected by a rod 4. rear pressure rolls 5, 6, are carried upon shafts 7, S, said shafts resting in cradles oi' v okes 9, each .of said shafts or holding ilevices comprising a U-shaped voke portion, and arins 10, 11, extending upwardly and ings 12,' 13 to receive the roll shafts and pernnt detachment thereof.
Springs 14, 15, extend in opposite direcf tions from a hracket 16, the latter secured on said roi 4. Said springs are adjustahly held bhv means of screws 17, t4 against the inner ends 19, 2U oi levers .vliieh are pivoted at 21, 5
s of typewriting machines, and par- The object of the invention is to provide i Fig. 2
. r, rearwardly therefrom and having open hearfraine, a link 28 connected to an arin 29 ol said lever pulls up a crank il() provided upon springs 14, 15. Said rock shaft is mounted in brackets 32depending from" said rod 4t, and cariies-collars 33, 3ft, each ,having an Yinclined or beveled rain-lace $35-, 36, saidcain faces ada ted tovengage tlieopposite edge 37, 38 of sai( levers 1), 20.
By depressing the key 25, the shaft 31 is l rocked to swing both lever arins 37, 38 upwardly to the position indicated in dotted lines, rig. 1, wherehy hotli springs lll, 15 are depressed, as indicated in dotted' lines, and the vokes E) permitted to drop to release the rolls, as at rig', 55. lt will he seen that the cams 2&5, 3o are oppositely disposed, the saine being true as to the levers and as to the springs, thusy enabling the latter to he fulg crunied together, or close to each other l about inidwzrv hetween the yolies 9, which i is an advantage and conduces to siinplicit)r and reliability as well as producing an inexpensive ronstruction and permitting easy adjustment of either spring.
Each oll the cani laces, it will be pei'- ceived, is oll suoli forni as to look the lever in the dotted line position, so that by de )ressing' the key 25 the leverni'uis are held down, there being no action on the part ol the springs to raise the saine. Thus the operator may freely adjust the sheets, and may thereafter raise the key 25 to restore the rolls to the )laten as atlt'ig. 4. 1 l. aving thus descrihial claim:
1.. in a typewriting machine, the combination with a platen and a platen l'raine, ola pressure roll, a s ning, a yoke caused hy said spring to press tlie roll against the platen,a key-operated rock shalt having a cani thereon, and a lever pivoted upon the platen frame and operated by said cani. and bearing; against said spring; to release the roll. i 2. in a type-.writing machine, the combination' with a revoluhle platen and a platen l'raine, oi rolls running upon the platen, a" plurality ol' springs, yolzes caused by said springs to press said rolls against the platen, a rock shaft having cams thereon, ant levers pivoted on the platen l'raine and operated by said earns and engaging said springs to release the saine from said rolls.
in); invention, l
l i 5 l 3. ln a typewriting,r inachin'e,`t`ne combinai tion with a revoluble platen, a pla-ten frame,
a` rock shaft 31 having ineaiis to release said andlsetsof rolls mounted to run upon the platen, of shafts i'or said rolls, yokes to hold said shafts, a bracket on said platen frame,
springs extending in opposite directions l'rom said bracket to engage said yokes', and key-operated means bearing ,upon said springs to release the yokes; said releasing means including a rock shaft and levers operated thereby to engage the springs, said levers pivoted on the platen frame.
5. In a typewritin machine, the combination with a revolub e platen and a platen frame, of sets o'f'rolls mounted to run upon the platen, shafts for said rolls7 yokes to hold said shafts, a bracket on said platen frame, springs extending in opposite dn'ections from said bracket to engage said yokes, and keyoperated means bearing upon said springs to release the yokes; said releasing means including a rock shaft and levers o erated thereby to enga e the springs, sai levers pivoted on the p aten frame, and said rock shaft having oppositely disposed cams toengage said levers. Y
6. 1n a Itypewriting machine,v the combination With a revoluble platen and rolls mount- I tion with a rotating platen, of aset of pres# sure rolls, springs to press the rolls against the platen, shafts for sup ortingtthe rollsf said shafts held by mova le yo es, a rock shaft held by brackets on a rod attached to the machine; a key for operating said rock shaft, cams mounted on said rock shaft, and
so formed that they lock the said springs 1 away'froin the yoke-supported rblls, thus releasing the 'pressure between the platen and rolls; and levers pivoted between their ends on brackets, said levers bearin on the face of the said cam on one side, an on the other bearing against said springs.
