JAMES P; BLAKE, OF ROCKVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Leners Patent No. 88,837, dated Ami 13, 1869.
IMPROVED DIE FOR MAKING AWLS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari: of the lame..
To all whom it 'may conce/rn Y Y, invented certain Improvements in the Manufacture of kwis; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, dear, and exact description thereof, reference being had .e the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents two dies, theirfaces brought tofether.
Figure 2 represents the face of the dies, and their peculiar construction.
The object of my invention is to manufacture awls, especially shoemakers awls, from round steel. This has been attempted many times, but not heretofore accomplished.
By my dies awls can be made in much less time than by hand, or even by the few machines in operation.
Awls are now made by machine, but from square steel, and theprocess is of considerable length;
The nature of my invention consists in forming the awl between two dies, the dies so constructed as to allow of surplus metal being thrown out.
The dies are operated by a press or drop, or in any manner suitable for the purpose.
In the drawings- A A are dies, having recess c and recess' o of the shape of a finished awl.
On each side of recesses o and c are wider indenta tions el cl,- these allow of surplus metal to be detached when the dies come together, and thus the awl is cut to suchv perfection that but little finishing is required.
This construction of dies saves drawing down metal, and is the most expeditious and cheap means for manufacturing awls yet invented.
What I claim as my invention, and desire t'o secure by Letters Patent, is
The dies A and A', constructed as.l shown, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof', I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: JAMES P..BLAKE.
