JEREMIAH STEVER AND JOHN A. 'WAY, OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 65,132, dated Jifay 28, i867.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINERY FOR MAKING PERRULES.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it knownthat we, JEREMIAH S'rnvnn and JOHN A. WAY, both of Bristol, county of Hartford, and State of Connecticut, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Machine for Making Ferrulcs; and-u enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, we will proceed t o-describe its construction and operation, referring to the drawings, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of thisirnprovement will be understood from the specification and drawings.
The object desired to be attained thereby is to cut from a metal rod or band, of the proper width anc thickness therefor, a blank of the proper length to form a given size ferrule; then bend it into the desired shape, press and true the same, and deliver it from the machine, in readiness for brazing, thus greatly facilitating andcheapening the manufacture thereof. In the accompanying drawings- Figure 1 is a top or plan view. I
Figure 2 is a sectional side elevation.
Figure 3 is a scctional end elevation.-
A is the bed or framework in or upon which the mechanism is arranged. Bis the driving-shaft. C, C C", 0, CF, and-O are cams arranged upon said shaft 13, each of which is designed to act its proper part, inthe proper time, upon the forming-bar, levers, and their connections, in the process of cutting the blank from a metal plate, forming, pressing, and delivering the ferrules from the machine. 1) is a driving-pulley or balancewhccl, secured upon the shaft B. E are cross-heads, fitted to work closely and freelybetween the ways 13, G is a metallic plate, or block. secured centrally upon the cross-piecc H, through \vhich is formed an orifice, in which to allow the formingpiu I to play up and down closely and freely. J are forming-dies, secured in or to the cross-heads E. K is a shear or cutter,- secured to the cross-head or forming-die J, the cutting edge of which works against the fixed cutter K, the object of which is to cut the blank from the platethe proper or desired length to form a ferrule, as it is fed into\the machine through the opening a between the edges of the cutters K K. L are sliding-bars, actuated by means of levers M M and earns O and C, which serve to close the ends of the blank around the forming-pin I, after it has been partially formed by the action of the forming-die J- M', M M", M, Mare levers, M and M of which connect with the sliding-bars L, and'are actuated by the cams G and C". The levers M and M are arranged on the rock-shafts N, one end of which is secured to the end of the arms 0, which connect with the knuckle-joints P of the cramp or press-arms P, and are actuated by the cams G and C, by the action of which the cutter K and former J, secured to the cross-head E, are pressed forward to cut a blank from the plate, and partially bend it around the forming-pin. I, which is actuated by the cam 0". R is a presser-bar, actuated by thecamC througlrthe arm R and the lever R. The object of this press-bar R is to true the edges of the ferrule. The levers M are reacted by springs or their equivalents. The shape, proportion, and arrangement of the several parts of the machine maybe changed without changing the principle of its operation.
Thus it will ,be seen that by introducing the metal plate into the machine, through the opening a, between the cutters K Kfa blank will be cut, and, by the action of the dicfi the blank will be partially bent around the pin I. Then, by the act-ion of the sliding-bars Lgthe ends will be closed around said pin I, when, by the united action of the dies J and J and the presser R, a ferrule is formed into proper or desirable shape, in rapid succession, in readiness for being brazed.
We believe we have thus shown the nature, construction, and operation so as to nable others skilled to make and use the same therefrom. Y
1. We claim the reciprocating bending dies J J, slides L L, and mandrel R, combined an rr ng for joint action, substantially in the manner described. p
2. We claim, in combination with the above, the presser R, substantially as and for the purpose described.
