UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GUSTAF SEM WALLIN, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, ASSIGNOR TO FIRM OF NYA AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS, OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN.
PNEUMATIC HAMMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.
Application filed October 18, 1907. Serial No. 398,007.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAF SEM IVALLIN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Sweden, residing at Stockholm, Sweden, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic Hammers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pneumatic hammers with the view to facilitate the manipulation of such hammers when in operation.
The usual pneumatic hammers for riveting and similar purposes are, as is well known, provided at the rear end with a handle by means of which the workman holds the hammer and presses the same against the work-piece. However, it happens often that the workman, while using a large hammer and dressing large rivets, must use both hands. for keeping the hammer pressed against the work-piece. In such cases he usually has the hammer rest on the left arm, as is illustrated in Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawing, and grips with the fingers of the left hand around the rear end of the hammer inside the handle in order to hold on with both hands. In as much as said part of the hammer ofiers the hand a very unsatisfactory point of grasping, the result is that the fingers of the left hand are overstrained and often become swollen, so that the workman for a shorter or longer time cannot fully or at least not without disagreeableness or pains make use of the said fingers.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 is a rear end elevation, and Fig. 3 is a perspective showing the handle attached to a tool in use.
The said inconvenience is removed by the present invention which consists in the pro- 0 The form of the lateral handle shown in the drawing may, obviously, be modified at will, and it may be easily understood that the hammer may be provided with one lateral handle on each side thereof. The lateral handle or handles may be integral with or removably secured to the hammer.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
An appliance of the character described comprising two handles fixed with respect to each other; one of the said handles being pro vided with a transversely disposed opening to receive one hand of an operator, and the other handle extending laterally from the first mentioned handle and resting in transverse alinement with the opening thereof and having a longitudinally dlsposed opening to receive the other hand of the operator.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
