zen of the United States of America, residing at Oil City, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Moistening Devices for Envelops, Stamps, Labels, &c., of which the following is a specification, ref erence being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a holder and moisteining device for stamps, labels and stickers, and the invention has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive device particularly designed for mercantile houses, express companies and post ofliccs, where large quantities of stamps, envelops and labels are used.

My invention aims to provide a device having a magazine for stamps, labels and stickers, the stamps, labels or stickers being moistened when withdrawn from the device, whereby they can be immediately adhesivcly secured to the envelop, package or article. In this connection, my invention obviates the necessity of persons using their tongues to moisten stamps or labels, it being a well known fact that serious injury has often occurred by blood poisoning from the adhesive material carried by the stamps and labels. To this end, I have devised a device having novel moistening rolls for stamps and labels, the device being constructed to accommodate rolls of stamps, labels or stickers that can be easily withdrawn from the device and placed upon the articles to be marked. It is therefore apparent that such a device :an be conveniently used in large dry goods stores where linen is marked by small tags adhesively secured thereto.

The detail construction entering into my invention will be more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the moistening device, Fig. 2 is a plan of the same, 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the device, Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view of the magazine of the device.

My improved moistening device consists of a metallic casing having a base 1, side walls 2 and 3, a front wall i, a rear inclined wall 5, a transverse partition 6 arranged adjacent to the front wall 4, and roviding a liquid receptacle 7, and a top p ate 8 partially closing the top of the casing.

The side walls 2 extend above the plate 8, as at 9 and 10, the extensions 10 of said side walls being slotted, as at 11., to receive the rectz'mgular ends 12 of a cylindrical drum 14 detachably mounted between the side walls. The drum 1.4 is provided with a detachable head 15, whereby a roller 1.6 can be j ournaled in the drum upon a shaft 17, said shaft be ing detachably held in the rectangular ends 12 of the drum. The stationary drum is provided with a spout 18, through which the stamps, labels or stickers carried upon the roller 16, are adapted to pass. The drum 14 is preferably constructed of light and durable metal, similar to the casing 1, while the roller 16 can be made of wood, china, or a light and durable material.

Between the extensions 9 of the side walls 2, I journal a small roller 19, and directly beneath said roller I ournal a large roller 20. These rollers are preferably made of rubber and are adapted to moisten the stamps, labels, or stickers passing from the spout 18 between said rollers, the roller 20 being partially immersed in the liquid contained. within the receptacle 7.

It is a convenient operation to tear a moistened stamp from the strip of stamps arranged upon. the roller 16, and passing be tween the rollers 19 and 20, and place the same upon an envelop. The novel construction of the device permits of the drum 14 being quickly removedwhereby easy access can be quickly had to the roller 16, to permit of a new roll of stamps, labels or stickers being placed within the drum, the end of the strip of stamps, labels, or stickers being passed through the spout 18 prior to placing the head 15 upon the drum.

I do not care to confine myself to the material from which the device is constructed, or to the size, proportion and minor details of construction, as such changes in my invention as are permissible by the appended claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A moistening device comprising a casing having a liquid receptacle formed at its forward end, a moistening roll journaled in said receptacle, a roller journaled between the side walls of said casing directly above said moistening roll, a stationary drum mounted at the rear end of said casing, a detachable head carried by said drum, a shaft mounted in said head and in said drum, a roll journaled upon said shaft and a spout carried by said drum.

2. A moistening device comprising a casing having a liquid receptacle formed at its forward end, a moistening roll journaled in said receptacle, a roller journaled between the side walls of said casing directly above said moistening roll, the rear of said casing being provided with oppositely disposed semi-circular brackets slotted to receive the rectangular ends of a drum mounted therebetween, an adjustable head carried by said drum, and a holding roller revolubly journaled within said drum and a feed spout carried by the latter.

3. A rotatableholding-roller positioned within a drum provided with a spout directed to a point between two parallel feed rollers and means for moistening one of said rollers as described.
