ful Improvements in and Relating to Centrifugal Pumps and Turbines, of which the folowing is a specification.
This inventionl relates tofmulti-stage cen- Itrifugal pumps andturbines and has for its main objectsto simpliy'the construction of such umps and turbines, and to afford a smoot ilow for the fluid throughout its passage 'from the inlet to the discharge pipe. These objects are attained by using one or more rotors of the kind characterized by a .central fluid pressure reservoir/of large capacity compared withthe tot'al cross section of the peripheralv outlet, such as the im- "peller or rotor described in my pending application of 13 Sept. 1906, S. N o. 334,456-, irl-which the fluidunder pressure in such a reservoirv is discharged throughv a' 'series of 'peripheral nozzles 1 or orices, and by divlding such rotor 'or rotors by a central web into twseparate Huid pressure reservoirs each having a constricted-peripheral 'outlet or' vseries of nozzles discharging into separate sets of expanding 'channels or other suitable chamber or chambers in the cutwater rin -or casin The dividingl web is so formed t at the uid whichenters on the left is discharged from the right hand outlet andthe fluid which enters at the right eye is discharged from the left hand outlet.

' As shown in Fig. 1 the left eyeAand the right eye A of the im eller are connected with the right hand perip eral outlet B and left hand outlet B respectively by interlaced passages U C in the body of the impeller o'r rotor.
With such a construction of rotor, a two stage centrifugal pump or turbine is obtained. by connecting the expanding chantrated has three double impellers with interlaced liuid passages as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 arefmou'nted on the samefshaft Within symmetrically formed cutwater rings a having suitable expanding channels b which rings are held in place around tlie rotor members c by the pump casing d Iwhich is bolted to the end covers d. In Fig. 5 is shown a balanced multi-stage pump or turbine having twol doublerotors mounted on one shaft and connected in series with each other but with the fluid patharranged so as to be symmetrical on the dtwo sides ofthe medial transverse plane, whereby the various ressures which would separately produce en thrust are equilibrated. It will also be noted that the pressures in each of the rotors are also balanced. or approximately so because the sum of the pressuresof the fluid enterin and leaving on one side of the rotor is equa to-the sum of the pressures of the fluid entering Aand leaving on the other side of the rotor'.
The same balancing result may be obtained by the parallel arrangement of a multi-stage' machine yhaving two double rotors whichis illustrated diagrammatically vpunipof; Fig. 3 and inthe series balanced 'the path Within t in FigfG, in 'which two strjeains of iuid 'enter-i l ing the inner edges of the two double rotors and passing twice through their respective rotors are discharged into the cutw'atervpaschine is indicated by the full and broken lines g, q, the full art being that portion of ary parts of the machine. In an'alternativ'e arrangement of multiple4 series Vbalanced pump .or turbine illustrated diaurarnmatically :in the saine manner in Fig. .7, the inlet is connected with the outer eyes ofy thel two outside rotors of the series, and the c utWater and partition ring passages are arranged to lead the fluid which enters at the left hand rotor of the series successively into the left hand eyeof each succeeding double rotor, While the iluid which enters at the right i hand rotor is led successively into the right eye of each rotor of the series. 1 In this casel A,the cutwater ring or casing passages are also crossed or interlaced as shown at j, j, but the path of each stream ofiiuid has a simple,`

In multi-stave centrifugal 4pumps and turbines, a rotor iaving two) ilu-1d pressure reservoirs separated by a' central partition, Huid passages in said partition which cross each other within the body of the rotor and connect the left hand reservoir with the right hand eye or inlet and the right hand reservoir 'with the left hand inlet, a cutwate'rring having duplicate sets of expanding channels into which the two reservoirs respectively discharge, a artition ring between 'successiverotors having ducts on each side of the dividtiiig partition, and a casing chambere'd or cored to connect the two sets of cutwater ducts respectively with lthe two partition ring ducts, substantially as described.
