um @I agg EDGAR ROBERTS, OF EAST ST. LOUIS, ILLINOIS.
DRENCHING-BIT.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed .Tune 7, 1905. Serial No. 264,172.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR ROBERTS, citizen of the United States, and resident of the city of East St. Louis, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drenching-Bits, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and eXact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to an improved drenching bit, which is to be used for administering medicine to horses and livestock.
My invention consists in certain. novel features of construction and arrangements of parts that will be hereinafter more fully shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a view of a horses head on which is located my improved drenching bit and the animals head being drawn up .in order to receive the medieine from the reservoir carried by the bit. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1 and showing the drenching bit detached from the animals head.
In the construction of my improved drenching bit I make use of a tube 1, in the center of which is formed an aperture 2, and immediately adjacent this aperture 2 within the tube is a plug 3.
Screw caps 4 are located upon the ends of the tube 1 and short links 5 are loosely mounted upon the ends of the tube, which links vare provided in their outer ends with apertures 6 that receive the lower ends of the cheek straps 7 of an ordinary halter S.
An inverted U-shaped yoke S) has its ends loosely engaged upon the ends of the tube 1, and a swivel ring 10 is loosely connected to the upper end of this yoke 9.
F iXed to one side of the yoke 9 is a cylindrical reservoir 11, provided at its end with an inlet opening 12, normally closed by a screw cap 13, and leading from the lower end of said reservoir to one end of the tube 1 is a short tube 14, in which is arranged an ordinary cut-off valve 15.
The plug 8 within the tube 1 is arranged on the opposite side of the aperture 2 from the end in which the tube is connected, in order that the contents ofthe reservoir 1 1 may dis charge into the tube 1 and out through the aperture 2 when the valve 15 is open.
In the use of my improved drenching bit the reservoir 11 is 'filled with the proper medicine in liquid form, the valve 15 being closed, after which the bit or rather the tube 1 is inserted in the animals mouth and the halter is fastened over the animals head.
A cable 17 which is secured to the swivel ring 1() is passed over a grooved pulley 18 secured to the ceiling, and by means of said cable the animals head is so elevated as that when the valve 15 is opened the medicine within the reservoir 1. 1 will readily pass downwardly through the tube 141 into the tube 1 and discharge therefrom through the aperture 2 into the animals mouth and throat.
The animals head is held in this elevated position for a short space of time after the valve 15 has been opened to insure the discharge of all of the medicine from the reservoir 11 and tube 1, and thus the medicine is administered to the animal in a very effective manner.
By providing the reservoir 1.1. and valve 15 the exact quantity and proportion of medicine can be administered without the liability of the medicine being spilled when adjusting the bit and elevating the animals head, as during such procedure an animal naturally becomes restless and tries to get away.
A drenching bit of my improved construction is simple, strong, and durable, and offers a very effective means whereby liquid medicine may be administered to horses and livestock.
I claim:
A drenching bit, conn'irising an inverted U-shaped yoke the swivel ring 10 in the upper end thereof, the tube 1 carried by the lower ends of the yoke, screw caps 4 mounted on the outer ends of the tube, there being an aperture formed :in the center of said tube, a container `11 `fixed on one side of the yoke, a tube 14 leading downwardly from said container into the end of the 'first mentioned tube, the valve 15 located in the second mentioned tube, plates 5 loosely mounted on the ends of' the first mentioned tube outside the ends of the yoke, and there being openings G formed in said plates to receive the cheek straps of a halter substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
EDGAR ROBERTS.
