IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR ADMINISTERING MEDICINE T0 HORSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 200,717, dated February 26, 1878,' application filed December 28, 1877.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY HARTMAN, of Camp Halleck, in the county of Elko and State of Nevada, have invented a new and Improved Apparat-us for Administering Medicine to Horses, of which the following is a specification Figure l is a perspective view of my improved apparatus, showing the manner of using the same. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the medicine-receptacle. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the gag. Fig. 4 is a detail view of one of the gag-irons. Fig. 5 represents the plate to which the straps of the headstall are attached.

The invention will rst be described in connection with the drawing, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the drawing, Ais the gag-bit, which consists of a block of wood having the central aperture a. A thumb-screw, B, runs from the end of the gag to the aperture a.
C C are levers, attached to the ends of the gag A by screws, and are suspended from the headstall by rings b, which are placed in curved slots c. The lower ends of the said levers are curved at d, and are drilled at their ends to receive the rings e, that are attached to the cord f. Slots g are formed in the levers C, for receiving the strap h, that passes under the lower jaw of the horse.
The gag may be used in connection with a headstall of ordinary7 construction; but in the present case it is shown in connection with a headstall consisting of the neckstrap i, the crown-strap j, the side straps k, and the straps Z m, the straps k lm being fastened to side plates o, which are, connected with the levers C by the rings b.
D is the medicine-receptacle, be made of vulcanized rubber or ble material. It consists of a bowl, p, attached to the tube q, and provided with the hinged cover r. The end of thetube q is provided with a removable section, E, to the end of which the convex perforated cap s is screwed.

A cord, F, is fastened to the valve u, and runs through the tube q to the bowl p, and thence upward and through an aperture in the side of the bowl, where it is provided with a ring, G. A hook, H, projects from. the side ofthe bowl p, for receiving the ring G, when it is desired to retain the valve open.
The apparatus is used by placing the gag in the horses mouth, and placing the headstall on the horse`s head, taking care to leave the strap t' loose on the neck. The gag is now turned by drawing the cord f upward until the mouth is open, and the aperture a is in position for receiving the tube of the medicine receptacle. The medicine receptacle being filled, the tube g is placed in the aperture a, and fastened by means of the thumb-screw B, which clamps a portion of the tube q, that is ribbed or groved to prevent slipping. The valve u is now opened by drawing the cord F, when the contents of the receptacle will be discharged into the horses mouth.
When a pill is to be administered, it is placed in the fork o, the perforated cap s is removed, and the receptacle D is filled with water. By pulling the cord F the valve u is opened, and, at the same time, the pill is discharged from the fork by being drawn into contact with the contracted portion of the part E. The water issuing from the receptacle'D carries the pill into the horses mouth. The perforated cap s is used in sprinkling the throat.
I am aware that a combined gag and Inedicine, receptacle is not broadly new; but
