FEED-BAG ADJUSTMENT.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK L. DAVIS, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Phllinder.
adelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Feed-Bag Adjustments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an attachment for use on feed-bags for horses; and the object is to provide an automatic adjustment so that the bag will be raised as the feed is consumed.
Heretofore the animal in his effort to secure the grain in the bottom of the bag would toss his head and lose the greater portion thereof by throwing it out of the bag. With my device the bag is raised gradually as the surface of the feed lowers, and the animal is assured the entire amount of feed.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, 1n which Figure 1 shows my device in position on a feed-bag. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of my device.
The device consists of a cylindrical casing 1, having an ear 2 at its top for securing it to a strap 3, which strap passes over the animals head. The ear 2 is formed integral with one of the cylinder-heads 4, and this head 4 is also formed with a depending angled portion 5. This angled end is formed with an opening 6. The cylinder is closed at both ends by the heads 4 and 7, and a central shaft 8 passes through both heads and the cylinder and holds the parts together. Inside the cylinder and mounted on the shaft 8 I provide a pair of disks 9. Between these disks I secure a flexible cord 10, one end of which is secured to the shaft 8, and the other end passes out of the casing through an open ng 11 in the wall thereof and in alinement with the opening 6 in the angled end of the head portion 5. This cord is provided with a button 12, adapted to limit the winding of said cord. On the shaft 8 between the disks and the opposite cylinder-head I provide a bandspring 13, one end of which is secured to the shaft and the other end to the wall of the cyl- The cords 10 are secured to the feed bag, one at either side, and the bag is suspended thereby. The use of two of my devices, one at either side, Wlll insure the uni-- form action of the bag.
The, operation is as follows: When the bag is filled, it is necessary to draw it away from the adjustment devices in order to place it on the horses head, and this drawing on the cords 10 will tighten the springs 13. As the feed is consumed the tension of the springs will draw up the cords and keep the feed in contact with the animals mouth until it has been consumed. The buttons 12 will limit the upward movement of the bag and will be so set that they contact with the surface 5 of the casing when the bottom of the bag has reached the animals mouth.
The device is comparatively simple and y et it insures absolutely against loss of feed.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tension device for automatically adjusting feed-bags, comprising a cylindrical casing, twocylinder-heads one of which is formed with an angled perforated ear on its periphery and an oppositely-disposed, rightangled, perforated guide, saidcylinder having an opening in the wall thereof in vertical alinement with the opening in said guide, a central shaft, a band-spring secured to said shaft at its inner end and to said casing at its outer end, a pair of disks on said shaft, a flexible cord secured to said shaft between said disks and passing through said openings in the cylinder and guide, a button on said cord adapted to contact with said guide and means for securing the device to both the feed-bag and the animal.
