ANTERIOR MATRIX-CLAMP.
To all whom it "may concern:
Be it known that I, Janus W. IVORY, a subject of Great Britain, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Anterior Matrix-Clamp, of which the f()ll0\ ing is a specification.
My invention relates. to a new and useful anterior matrix clamp and consists of jaws adapted to engage the matrix band on opposite sides of the teeth and with means for op erating one of the jaws whereby the said jaws are caused to tightly grasp the band and lock it in position.
It further consists of means for adjusting the parts.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
Figures 1 and 2 represent elevations from opposite sides of a matrix clamp embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 represents a plan view of the clamp removed from position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :It has been found difficult to retain matrix bands in position and to properly clamp the same therein. In the drawings I have shown a construction which overcomes these di'lliculties and which can be quickly and easily placed in and removed from position, which can be quickly and easily tightened 'when in position, but it will be evident that various changes may be made and other instrumentalities may be employed which will come within the scope of my invention, and I do not, therefore, desire to be limited in every instance to the exact construction as herein shown and described.
1 designates the matrix band which is adapted to be placed around the teeth to be filled and which in the present instance has passed around the back of the tooth and proj ects on either side of the tooth between the same and the next adjacent teeth, in front thereof, it being noted that in this way the band serves as a backing for the plastic molds when the same are used to give the proper impression to the filling so that the filling is left almost finished and of the proper contour. It further serves for a support for the tooth if it is loose or sore, when the tooth is being filled and when struck by the mallet.

The clamp consists of the frame or body 2 having the offset portion 3 thereon and being provided with the slots 4: and 5 on opposite sides of said off-set and the ends of said body or frame having the ears or lugs 6-6. Pivotally connected in the off-set 3 as for example at 7, is the palatal jaw 8 which extends from its pivotal point 7 rearwardly and downwardly and has the inturned end 9 adapted to engage with the band at the rear of the tooth, as will be best understood from Figs. 2 and 3. Passing through the palatal jaw S, is a set, or contact screw 10 which comes in contact or in touch with the band 1 to hold it in suitable engagement with the tooth, it being noticed more particularly from Fig. 3 that the pivotal point of support of this jaw 8 is adjacent the front of the matrix clamp and that a portion of the jaw proects therefrom, to the othersidc of said clamp.
11 designates a set screw which passes through the upper wall of the off-set and bears upon the upper portion of the palatal aw 8 in order to adjust the same, a suitable spring 12 rigidly supported bears against the underside of the said jaw and the pressure thereof is against the action of the set screw 11, it being understood that the said set screw overcomes the tension of the spring when properly operated therefor.
13 and 14 designate labial arms which are adjustably mounted and serve to engage the band 1 upon the outer side of the teeth to hold the same laterally, from the cavity or tooth which is to be filled and forces the band against the surface of the contiguous teeth, giving a rigidity and firmness to the band and at the same time will bring the tooth to be operated upon slightly out of line from its natural position, thus affording easier access to the cavity. In the present instance the labial arms 13 and 14 are each provided with the head 15 having a threaded opening in which or through which pass set screws 16, which latter are carried by the lugs 6 and are provided with the thumb nuts 17, whereby the labial arms 13 and 14 with their heads 15 can be adjusted by proper rotation of the set screws 16, it being understood that the heads 15 project through and. move in-the slots 4 and 5 in the body 2 and that the said heads are engaged by a nut 18 in order that the parts will be held in suitable position.
In the drawings I have shown the labial arms 13 and 14 as engaging with the teeth next but one, on each side to that to be filled, it being understood that the said arms can engage with the next adjacent teeth if desired.
The operation of the parts is as follows The band 1 is placed in proper position with respect to the tooth to be filled, that is to say, in the drawing as shown, passing around the back of the tooth and between it and the next adjacent teeth extending in front thereof. The clamp is now placed in position with the palatal jaw at the rear of the tooth I: V to be filled and abutting the clamp at this point, the set screw 10 being suitably operated to cause the proper contact. The labial aws 13 and 14 are in front of the second tooth from the one to be filled and engaged with the ends of the band 1, it being understood that the proper position of these jaws is obtained by the rotation of the set screws 16.
The clamp being now in position, by rotating the screw 11 the same will bear upon the jaw 8, depressing the same against the action of the spring 12 and causing the labial jaws to tightly engage the front of the teeth while the palatal jaws make an extremely tight wedging, as will be evident and the band will be firmly held in position, as before stated. By releasing said set screw 11 the jaw 8 will be forced up by the action of the spring 12 and the clamp thus be released and. easily removed.
Having thus described my invention,
what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the character described, a band a frame, a pivoted jaw adapted to engage with the band on one side of a tooth and jaws carried by said frame and adapted to engage with the band on the front side of the teeth adjacent said tooth.
2. In a device of the character described, a band a frame, a spring actuated jaw carried thereby adapted to engage with the band on one side of a tooth, aws carried on said frame and adapted to engage the band on the front side of the teeth adjacent said tooth and means for laterally adjusting said latter mentioned jaws.
3. In a device of the character described, a band a frame, a spring actuated jaw carried thereby, adaptedto engage with the band on one side of a tooth, jaws carried on said frame and adapted to engage the band on the front side of the teeth adjacent said-tooth,
means for laterally adjusting said latter mentioned jaws and a set screw passing through said first mentioned jaw.
' 4. In a device of the character described, a band a frame, a pivoted. aw carried thereby and adapted to engage with the band on one side of a tooth, adjustable jaws carried by said frame and adapted to engage with the band on the front side of teeth adjacent said tooth, a spring bearing on said first mentioned jaw and a set screw carried by said frame and adapted to actuate said first mentioned jaw for clamping the device in position.
5. In a device of the character described, a band a frame, a pivoted aw carried thereby adapted to engage with the band on one side of a tooth, set screws carried by said frame,
jaws engaged by said set screws and adapted to be operated thereby and means on said frame for actuating said pivoted aw.

and adapted to engage with the band on one side of a tooth, jaws carried by said frame and adapted to engage the band on the front side of teeth adjacent said tooth, a spring bearing on said pivoted jaw, a set screw carried by said frame and engaging said jaw to actuate the same, longitudinally adjustable jaws carried by said frame, a set screw on gaging with said. adjustable jaws and carried by said frame, for adjusting the same and an off-set on said pivoted jaw for contact with the matrix band.
7. A frame having slots therein, a jaw pivoted to said frame at substantially the center thereof, means for adjusting the position thereof, jaws movably mounted in said slots, and means engaging said jaws for laterally adjusting the same.
8. A frame having an offset therein and having slots on opposite sides of said offset, jaws movably mounted in said slots, means for adjusting said jaws on said frame, a jaw pivotally mounted in saidoffset, a spring acting on said jaw and means for adjusting said pivoted jaw said offset being located centrally and. over the pivoted jaw.
