Specification of Letters Patent.
' Patented May 12, 1908.
Application filed April 12, 1907. Serial No. 367,801.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, MARK ST. CLAIR ELLIs, lieutenant United States Navy, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Traveling-Bag, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in traveling bags; and the objects of my improvement are, first: to provide a bag particularly adapted to the needs of naval oflicers when packing and traveling, which can be easily packed and unpacked; and second; a bag which can be used as a soiled linen bag when not in use for above named purposes; and third; to provide a bag which cannot be tampered with by unauthorized persons. I attain these objects by the construction and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure No. 1 is a view of the bag as assembled and looked, as it appears when ready for travel. Fig. No. 2 is a view of the top of the bag showing details of the method to lace top and bottom together. Fig. No. 3 is a view of the bottom of the bag showing details of same as used for a soiled linen bag for ocean travel. Fig. No. 4 is a detail of the locking arrangement. Fig. No. 5 is a section on line 10-11 of Fig. 2. Fig. No. 6 is a section on line 1214 of Fig. 3, the right side of each case being the inside of the bag.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The bottom of the bag, Fig. 3, is made of canvas or other suitable material secured together to hold such articles as may be placed therein: A band B, with eyelets therein is attached to the bottom together with suitable lashings L, for securing same to the top; and a row of eyelets M at the top with draw vention rest. able for lacing with the eyelets in band B,
string S, suitable for hanging up the bottom when used as a soiled linen bag. Suitable handles H, are attached to the top and bottom for convenience in transporting; and suitable rings p or gromets G, for locking the top to the bottom under varying conditions of fullness by being placed over the staple C.
Fig. No. 2 shows in detail the top of the bag wherein the essential features of my in- T is a band with eyelets suitand thus drawing the two parts together in a telescopic manner. The lap opening P enables the flaps of the top to be drawn back and the lacings or securing member easily adjusted When the bottom is filled and the top laced to the bottom the flaps are secured by the snap hooks K and the rings p and the top locked to the bottom as shown in Figs. 1 and 4. a is an eye in one flap, and C is a single staple which engages af.
I am aware that prior to my invention, telescope bags of the sailors clothes bag pattern have been used, but
What I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A traveling bag of the character stated, consisting of two integral parts, top and bottom, said to telescoping the bottom and provided with a slot on the side thereof and means for retaining the closure thereof, said bottom and top each provided with suitable members for securing them together; substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
MARK ST. CLAIR ELLIS.
