EJI ECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,955, dated July 4, 1905.
To all when), H HWY/{j cone/ .1%:-
Be it known that l, JAMES WILLIAM PYNcu, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of ltipon, in the county of Fond du Lac and State of \Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Leggings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
lVLvinvention relates to an improvement in laced leggings; and the purpose of the invention is to so construct a legging that it will lace at the front and so that the front will be open for the introduction of thefoot only a portion of the length of the legging, the lower part of the front being pcrmi'inently closed by a fold ing tongue.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide means of lacing which can be more quickly and conveniently operated than lacings of the usual type and to so locate and hold the lace at the bottom of the legging that it will notdrop under the foot while the legging is being placed upon the person.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will behereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a legging represented as laced upon the leg of a wearer. :lflg. 2 is a perspective view of the legging unlaced and open; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken, 1'n'actically, on the line 3 3 of lllig. 1.
The legging A, is open at the front, providing opposing side edges and 11, reinforced at the inner face of the legging by a facing 12 of any stout and pliable material. The space between the two side edges 10 and 11 is open only from a point below the longitudinal center of the legging to the top edge, the lower portion of such space being permanently closed by a tongue 13, which extends to the bottom edge of the legging, as is shown in Fig. 2. The side edge of the tongue 13 is secured to the inner wall of the legging adjacent to its corresponding edges 10 and 11, and the Application filed January 28, 1905. Serial No. 243,029.
edgesol the tongue are preferably introduced between the side wall of the legging and the facings 19.. The tongue 13 is made of any suitable flexible material and is of suflicient width to permit the front of the legging to be opened sufficiently to readily admit the passage of the foot. l Vhen the legging is closed forlacing, the tongue folds upon theinncr face of the legging and completely covers the space between the edges 10 and 11 at the foot and ankle, and at that time the space between the remaining length of the said side edges 10 and 11 is closed by a flap l t, secured to the edge 10, which flap is sulliciently long to extend over the upper portion of the tongue.
liloolebuttons 15 are secured to the exterior of the legging adjacent to the edge 11, and eyelets 16 are produced in the opposite side surface of the 'legging adjacent to that portion of the edge 10 at the tongue 13, as is shown in Fig. 1, and above the series of eyelets 16 on the same side of the legging a series of hool buttons 16 is secured. Two eyelets 16 are employed for each of the two lowermost buttons 15, and the buttons 16 are arranged alternately with the buttons 15, as is shown in Fig. 1. In one lower corner of the legging an eyelet 17 is made, and a corres iionding eyelet 18 is produced at the other lower corner, while at the central lower portion of the tongue 13 one or more eyelets 19 are located.
The lace B is provided with a knot 20 at one end and is passed from the inside out through the eyelet 17, then across the outside of the tongue 13 and through the eyelet or eyelets 19 in the tongue. Thence the lace is passed from the outside through the eyelet 18 and is then laced through the eyelets 16, as is shown in Fig. 2, in such manner as to form two outer loops 21, as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be observed that when the legging is opened the lower part of the lace is supported by the eyelet or eyelets 19 and the tongue in such manner that when the legging is being placed on the lower portion of the leg the lower part of the lace cannot loop under the foot. W hen the legging is on the limb, the flap 1 lis turned in, and the two edges are brought conveniently together, thus folding the tongue 13. Then the loops 21 are drawn upon, tightly closing the edges of the legging at the bottom, and the loops are passed over the buttons 15 0pposite them. Finally the entire lace is placed under tension and carried first over a button 15 and then over a button 16 until the top button is reached, whereupon the upper end of the lace is secured in any desired manner by means of a clamp 22, for example, secured to the legging.
I desire it to be understood that the abovedescribed manner of lacing is applicable to all kinds of laced leggings, boots, shoes, and rubbers.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. A laced legging provided with a folding support for a lace located between the side edges of the legging at its bottom portion, the said support being provided with openings therein through which the lace is adapted to slide.
2. A laced legging adapted to open at the front, a flexible tongue secured at its side edges to the inner faces of the body of the legging, closing its front opening at the bottom portion thereof, said tongue having an eyelet in its transverse central portion, the body of the legging being provided with eyelets at its lower front corners, as specified.
3. The combination with the body of a legg ging or like article of apparel, open at the front and having buttons adjacent to one side edge, and eyelets and buttons adjacent to the opposite side edge, the eyelets being at the lower portion of said side edge, the body of the leg ging being also provided with an aperture at each lower corner, of a flap secured to the upper portion of one side edge of the body, a folding tongue secured to the body at its lower portion, extending from one side edge to the other, which tongue is provided with an eyelet at its lower central portion, and a lace which is passed through the corner eyelets, through the eyelet in the tongue and across the outer face of the tongue, the said lace being also passed through the eyelets at the side edge of the front opening, being adapted likewise to engage with the buttons adjacent to the front opening, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
