BOOT OR SHOE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 621,922, dated March 28, 1899.
Application filed'Aprill5, 1898- fierial No. 677,684. (No model.)
T0 (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD EDWARD KEL- sALL, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at Dolton Lodge, Bexhill, in the county of Sussex, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in boots and shoes, the object being by a novel arrangement or construction of the upper to provide a boot or shoe of artistic appearance, of extreme lightness and very cool for summer wear, and which is especially suitable for use when cycling, golfing, or indulging. in any other form of athletic exercise where a boot or shoe possessed of great flexibility is required, and it is further very suitable for wear at the seaside.
According to my invention the upper of the boot or shoe is formed of open-work or straps crossed and interlaced, the parts being secured together, as hereinafter set forth, the boot or shoe being. intended to be worn over socks, stockings,or a mocca'sin, which are preferably ornamented in any suitable manner or worked with artistic designs, although of course my improved boot or shoe may be worn over the ordinary socks or stockings.
The interlacing strips forming the upper of a boot or shoe constructed according to my invention may be of leather, cloth, satin, or other suitable material, and they may be worked, embroidered, or ornamented according to the taste of the wearer.
In order that my invention may be more fully understood, I will now proceed to describe same with reference the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of the outer side of a shoe constructed according to myinvention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner side of such a shoe. Fig. 3 is an elevation of a boot constructed according to this invention. Fig. 4 illustrates a plan of a segment or length of material employed in the construction of the upper portion of a boot such as shown at Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the parts forming the upper of a shoe constructed according to my invention.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In constructing a shoe according to my in- 'vention and as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the upper is formed of two pieces of material a Z), Fig. 5, cut approximately to the shape shown, the portion a being cut in such a manner as to form the greater portion of the upper of the shoe when sewed or suitably secured to a suitable sole 0, the front of the part a consisting of alternate bars or strips dand spaces cl. The second portion 2) of the upper is furnished with a series of projecting strips f, designed to cross and inter-lace with the strips (1, as shown, Figs. 1 and 2, at'any suitable angle, the extremities of the said strips f being stitched or suitably secured to the opposite side f of the piece a, while the shoe is secured in position upon the foot of the wearer by means of a suitable buckle g, through which the tab 9 of the piece 1) passes, or any other suitable fastening device may be employed.
, In constructing a boot according to my invention and as shown in Fig. 3 the upper is formed of two portions 00 Z) in a similar manher to the shoe shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The
two parts instead of terminating in a tongue and buckle extend in an upward direction, as shown at a b, and terminate in aband b designed to encircle the leg. tween the upper of the boot formed by the parts a b and the encircling band 19 is then filled in With a series of interlacing strips h, as shown, and arranged at any convenient angle, a detached length of material h, cut into the necessary strips 72, being shown separately at Fig. 4:. The parts of the boot may be buttoned or laced together, as shown, the laces being tied at the top in the usual manner, and in this case an ornamental band 8 is provided designed to cover the top of the laces and which is designed to'be secured in position by means of a buckle or other suitable fastening, (not shown,) said band being stitched or secured in any convenient manner to the top of the boot, so as to prevent it becoming entirely detached or lost.
The interlacing strips (Z, f, and h are at the The space bepoint where they cross each other stitched or suitably secured to prevent their slipping, and the boot or shoe can be furnished with a sole formed of suitable materials and of a size and thickness varying according to the purpose for which it is intended, While the buckle or other fastening can be arranged upon either side, according to requirements.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
I11 a boot or shoe, the combination, with an upper formed of two parts, one part, a, having strips (1 and openings (1 closed at each end, and the other part, I), having stripsf I5
