To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NICK SPANICK, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at Loyalhanna, in the county of Vestmoreland and State of Pennsylvania,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is a s ecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

T hisl invention relates to folding umbrellas, and the invention has for its object to )rovide positive and reliable means for folding an umbrella into a comparatively small space, whereby the same may be placed in an ordinary hand grip or trunk.

My invention aims to provide a folding umbrella that can be easily and quickly folded, the umbrella embodying a sectional handle rod and telescopio cover supporting ribs, the sections of the handle rod being detachably secured together to prevent a collapse of the umbrella, while the same is being used in a raised position.

The detail construction of my invention will be presently described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several' views, in which 2- Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of my improved umbrella in a closed position, Fig. 2 is a similar view of a portion of an umbrella in a raised position, Fig. 3 is an elevation of a portion of the umbrella in a folded position, Fig. 4 is an elevation enlarged partly in section of portions of two of the sections of the handle rod illustrating the manner of securing said sections together, Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view taken at right angles to the line of section of Fig. 4.

To put my invention into practice, I construct the handle rod of my umbrella of four sections, a handle section 1, an intermediate section 2, an upper section 3, and a tip section 4. The sections l, 2 and 3 are tubular inlform; the tip section 4 may be tubular or so id.

The handle section l, intermediate section 2, and u per section 3 are secured together by novel) interlocking clasps illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing. The intermediate section 2 has its ends provided with sleeves S having diametrically opposed bayonet shaped slots 9 formed in their ends. Adapted to engage in said slots are transversely arranged pins l0 carried by the ends of the sections 3 and 1.

The intermediate section 2 is provided with spring clasps 1l having thumb portions 12 ada ted to protrude through openings 14 formedp in the ends of the sections 2. The clasps 11 extend into slots 15 formed in the sleeves S, and when the sections are placed together, the clasps are adapted to engage in notches 16 formed in the ends of the sections 1 and 3. The bayonet shaped slots 9 are placed in longitudinal alinement with the clasps 11, while the notches 16 of the sections 1 and 3 are ositioned at right angles to the longitudinalD aXis of the ins 10, this arrangement necessitating the p acing of the sections together, and then rotating said sections a quarter of a revolution, to lock the pins 10 in the bayonet-shaped slots 9 and position the clasps whereby they may engage in the notches 16 of the sections 1 and 3.

In Eig. 4 of the drawing, the sections 2 and 3 are shown placed together prior to a quai'- ter rotation, the notch 16 of the section 3 being shown in section to receive the clasps 11 of the section 2. In Fig. 5 of the drawing, the two sections are locked together which isaccomplished by a quarter rotation of the section 2 illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The upper section 3 is provided with a crown 17 to which is pivoted the inner ends of the sections 13 of the ribs, these sections being tubular and slotted to receive the depending lug 19, of the rib sections 20, which are slidably mounted in the tubular rib sections. The telescopic rib sections 18 and 20 constitute the cover supporting ribs of an umbrella, the cover being suitably secured to said ribs in such a manner as not to interfere with the telescopic movement of said rib sections. The cover supporting ribs are moved by stretchers 21, these stretchers being pivotally connected to a runner 22 slidably mounted upon the handle rod and to the lugs 19 of the rib -sections 20. To maintain the umbrella in a raised as well as a lowered position, the sections 2 and 3 are provided with ordinary clasps 23 adapted to engage in the slot 24 formed in the runner 22.

From the foregoing description, it will be observed that I have devised a simple and inexpensive umbrella embodying a sectional handle rod and telescopic ribs, the ribs being telescoped or placed in a folded positionby simply gripping the lower ends of the rib sections 20 and the runner 22, when the umbrella is closed and forcing the runner and rib section 20 upwardly, until the latter have become telescoped by the tubular ribs 18. The handle section l, intermediate section 2 and the tip 4 can then be detached from the upper section 8 and placed beside the folded ribs, and wrapped into a small arcel.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is2

In a folding umbrella, a tubular handle rod formed of an upper and a lower section the upper section having a vertical slot in one end and a transverse pin spaced from the slot and at right angles thereto and the lower section having a reduced portion adapted to enter the upper section and with oppositely disposed longitudinal slots in its reduced end having oppositely extending lateral terminals and with spaced slots in alinement with the longitudinal slots of said reduced portion,

one of said spaced slots extending for a distance into said reduced end, and a U-shaped resilient member fitting in said lower section and bearing against its sides and With spaced projections on one of its aims extending through said spaced slots, whereby when the sections are united the transverse pin of the upper section will enter the longitudinal slots of the reduced portion of the lower section and be received in the lateral terminals thereof and the upper projection of the resilient member will be received in the longitudinal slot of the upper section and in the adjacent spaced slot of the lower section..
