FOLDING UMBRELLA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 20, 1919.
Application filed November 27, 1917. Serial No. 204,219.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORLANDO W. Borr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shreve, Wayne county, State of Ohio, have V invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of which the following is aspecification.
The present invention relates to umbrellas, and more particularly to that type known as a folding umbrella.
An object of the present invention is t provide a relatively simply constructed umbrella capable of being folded into at least one-half its length; which has expansible and collapsible ribs, adapted to beinterlocked by the stretchers when in extended po-.
sition; which is provided with means for holding the. stretchers when manually extended prior to the locking of the stretchers in extended position by the opening'of the umbrella; and to provide an improved construction of rib mounting which admits of the nesting of the parts carriedby the ban dle or stick upon the outer end of thelatten extended position.
Fig. 2 is a detail enlarged perspectiveview of one of the ribs employed.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view, enlarged, of one of the inner rib sections.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation -of*one of the outer rib sections. v
Fig. 5 is a'fragmentary enlarged view in section of the telescoping ends of the rib sections, showing the stretcher connected thereto and in looking position. I
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary perspecti e view through the rib connections with the stick, showing the shiftable sleeve in closed position and the nesting of the parts. thereof between the hinged ends of the ribs.
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a modified form of rib.
Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the same extended and in locked position.
Referring to the drawing 10 and 11 designate respectively the outer and inner sections of a stick or stock which are hinged together at their meeting ends by preferably a strap hinge 12, and which are held in extended co-axial relation by a spring. clip 13 fixed to the section 10 and engaging over a proJectigm-or pin 14 carried uponjthe adjacent end of thesection 11 The clip 14 and the pin 13 are arranged upon the side of the stick opposite to the strap hinge 12 to pre-. vent the breaking. of the stick until the clip.
13 israised out of engagement with the pin.
The outer section 10 has a collar 15ffixed thereon near its outer extremity by a transverse rivet'or the like, and is provided with a plurality ofrelatively long fingers 16 t0 the outer ends of which the ribs are pivoted. The fingers 16 preferably curve in-:
wardly or toward the opposite end of the stlck and have pivotally mounted thereon the inner sections 17 of the ribs. The said sections 17 may be tubular as shown and are provided upon their inner sides with longitudinal slots 18 extending a considerable dis tance throughout the lengths of the sections 17 and terminating at their outer ends in laterally formed notches 19. Each tubular sectionl? is also provided near its free end with a short longitudinal slot 20 and inwardly extending ears 21 at the opposite sides of the slot 20.
Slidable in each tubular section 17 is an outer or stem section 22 preferably rounded in cross-section and provided upon its inner end with a laterally extending lug 23 adapted to move in the longitudinal slot-.18, and adapted to enterthe notch 19 when the stem section 22 is turned within the tubular section. Theends of the stem sections 22 are first reduced and then headed, as at 24, to accommodate andretain a ring 25 thereon by means of which a flexible covering 26 may be secured to the outer end of each rib. The covering 26 is-of ordinary construction and has a central aperture through which the outer end of the stick section 10 and the collar 15 may project. A ferrule 27 is fitted over the outer end of the stick section 10 and.
enter the slots 20 of the rib sections 17, and.
to bind against the adjacent sides of the stem sections 22 of the ribs to lock the sections 22 from longitudinal movement in the sections 17 The sleeve 29 is relatively long to ngage the upper ends of the strap hinge 12 and the clip 13 when the sleeve 29 is drawn downwardly to open or expand the umbrella.
Figs. 7 and 8 disclose a modified form of rib wherein the inner rib section 17 is in the form of a fiat bar provided at suitable intervals and at opposite edges with registering arcuate fingers 31 which form a cylindrical guide way for the outer section 22 of the rib. The upper ends of the fingers 31 terminate in closely spaced apart relation to admit the passage of the lug 23 therebetween during the longitudinal sliding move ment of the rib section 22, and the lug 23 is adapted to be turned laterally into engagement with one of the fingers 31 to hold the rib sections from collapsing. The stretchers 28 are pivoted upon the inner pair of fingers 31 and. have their cam heads 30 binding directly against the adjacent sides of the stem sections 22. Various modifications may be resorted to in the construction of these ribs for holding the same in telescoping or rela tive sliding engagement, for locking them initially from collapsing when individually extended and for accommodating the cam heads 30 to retain the ribs from collapsing when the umbrella is expanded.
In use, in order to raise the umbrella it is only necessary to swing the inner handle section 11 into axial alinement with the outer section 10, which movement brings the pin 14: into interlocking engagement with the clip 13. The heads 24 of the stem sections 22 are now drawn inwardly to extend the ribs and are then turned laterally a short distance to move the projections 23 out of the slots 18, or out of line with the spaces between the fingers 31 when the modified construction of rib is employed. This adjustment initially holds the ribs extended. The sleeve 29 is now drawn inwardly toward the hinge 12 and the stretchers 28 are swung about their pivotal connections with the ears 21 and force the cam heads 30 through the slots 20 and against the stem sections 22. The heads 30 thus lock the stem sections in extended position to hold the umbrella cover 26 stretched, and to also hold the stems 22 from tuniing'torelease the lugs 23 thereof.
It is of course understood that various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction of the foregoing description of the present preferred embodiment without departing from the spirit thereoflsuch changes and modifications being restricted only by the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a folding umbrella, the combination, of a stick comprising a pair of sections, a hinge connecting said sections, a spring clip carried by one section, a pin carried by the other section for co-action with said spring clip to hold the sections against pivotal movement, a collar fixed on the outer end of said stick, ribs pivotally mounted on the collar, a sleeve movable toward and from the collar on said stick, stays connecting the sleeve to the ribs, a cover on the ribs, said hinge and spring clip adapted to limit the inward movement of the sleeve from the collar to hold the umbrella in raised position.
2. In a folding umbrella, the combination, of a stick, a plurality of ribs hinged to the stick, each rib comprising an inner tubular section, having a short slot near its outer end and outstanding ears at opposite sides of said short slot, and an outer section slidable within the tubular section, and stretchers adjustably mounted on the vhandle at their inner ends and pivoted to said ears at their outer ends, said stretchers having cam heads between said ears adapted to enter the short slots and bind the outer sections of the ribs from turning. 1 v
3. In a folding umbrella, the combination of a stick, a plurality of ribs hinged to the stick, each rib comprising an inner tubular section having a longitudinal slot for the greater part of its length in one side terminating in a lateral notch at the outer end of the slot and having a short slot near its outer end and outstanding ears at opposite sides of the short slot and an outer section slidable within the tubular section and provided with a lug on one side adapted to travel in said longitudinal slot and to enter the notch when the outer section is turned laterally, and stretchers adj ustably mounted on the handle at their inner ends and pivoted to said ears at their outer ends, said stays having cam heads between said ears adapted to enter the short slots and bind the outer sections of the ribs from turning.
