N 'Umrnn sfrnfrns PATENT inno.
WILLAM MABLE, OFFORT COLLINS, COLORADO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALFTO WINTHROP B. MORRIS,` OFl FORT COLLINS, COLORADO.
TRAVE LING-'CASE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 28, 1908.
Application led cto'ber 9, 1907. Serial No.. 396,687.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM MABLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Collins, in the county of Larimer and State of Colorado, have Traveling-Case, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to traveling cases and its object is to provide a combined suit case and telescope which can be readilyI adjusted so as to hold a greater or less number of articles as may be desired, said adjustment being readily effected. and the parts firmly secured against movement subsequent to their adjustment.
A still further object is to provide a device .of this character having a cover which can be opened or closed inde endently of the relative positions to whic the adjustable portions of the case have been shifted.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings is shown the preferred form of the invention.
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a .case embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a transverse section therethrough. Fig. '3 is a longitudinal section through a portion of the cover and showing the means for detachably fastening the handle thereto. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section through one of the clamping devices for holding the adjustable section against independent movement.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference, 1 designates the bottom section of the case, the same being preferably in the form of a rectangular receptacle having feet 2 secured transversely upon the bottom thereof and provided with slotted guide strips 3 which are riveted or otherwise fastened to the sides of the section 1. rlhe inner portion of the walls of beted as indicated at 4 to constitute guides and retainers for buttons 5 designed to slide within the rabbeted portions of the strips 3 and having screw threaded stems 6 extending thereform and through the slots, Surrounding and slidably mounted on the bottom section 1 is an adjustable section 7 del signed to l ends 8 of the cross strips 2.
invented a new and useful top of the section 7,
these slots are rabnormally rest upon the projecting The ottom of this adjustable section is of course open, the section 1 constituting a closure therefor. The however, hasa cover 9 hinged thereto as at 10 and provided with suitable locks 11 whereby it can be held in closed position. Secured upon the sides of the adjustable section 7 close to the lower edges thereof are washers 12 each of which has an opening 13 therethrough designed to receive one of the stems 6 hereinbefore referred to. Small thumb pieces 14 are preferably screwed upon the. outer end portions of the stems so that when said thumb pieces are rotated they bind the adjustable section 7 in any position to which it may be shifted upon the section 1. A handle 15 is provided at its ends with rings 15*L designed to engage snap hooks 16 which are fastened to the middle portion of the cover 9 by means of bolts 17 extending through apertures within said cover.
Whenthe parts are arranged in the manner described the device is designed to be used as a telescope and by loosening the thumb pieces 14 section 7 can be adjusted upwardly or downwardly, the heads or buttons 5 sliding within the strips 3 during this movement. When the desired adjustment has been effected the thumb pieces are rotated so as to produce the binding action heretofore described whereupon the two sections 1 and 7 become securely fastened together. Should it be desired to use the device as a suit case the section 7 1s moved into position against the projecting ends 8 of the strips 2 and the two sections are then bound together in the manner described. Handle 15 is detached from the snap hooks 16 and is fastened to similar snap hooks 18 on one side of section 7.
`lt will be seen that this device is very simple, durable, and efficient and that it combines all the features of a telescope and suit case.
What l claim is:
A traveling oase comprising telescopically connected body and top sections, longitudinally slotted guide strips secured upon the sides of the body section, said strips having inturned ends extending under the bottom l of the body, feet outstanding from the strips adj aoent said ends,-a button slidably mount- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as ed Within each guide strip, means extending my own, I have hereto affixed my signature 10 therefrom for engaging the top section, and in the presence of two Witnesses. clamping means engaging said extending means for binding the top section upon the WILLIAM MABI 1E guide strips, said feet oonstitutin abutments IVitnesses: for the top section, and a hand e upon the W. F. CRONLEY,
top section. E. C. MCANELLY.
