BAG-FASTENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE L. EneERToN, a cltizen of the United States, residing at Goldsboro, in the countyof Wayne and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Bag-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to bag fasteners and has for its object to provide improved means whereby the mouth of a bag, sack or other containing receptacle. may be effectually closed without the necessity of sewing the same or without the employment of draw strings, clips and similar auxiliary fastening devices.

A further object of the invention is to provide a bag fastener including co-acting p1ercing members adapted to be threaded through the walls of the bag at the mouth thereof and provided with terminal loops for the reception of the adjacent corners of the bag, said loops being provided with transverse tongues adapted to engage the corners of the bag thereby to lock the piercing members against accidental displacement.

A further object is to form the piercing members with pointed terminals which overlap at the center of the bag or receptacle and thus serve to reinforce the mouth of said bag and also prevent the pointed terminals of said members from cutting or tearing an adjacent bag when several of said bags are arranged in contact with each other.

A still further object of the invention is to generally improve this class of devices so as to increase their utility, durability and el'li-. ciency as well as to reduce the cost of manufacture.

Further objects and advantages will appear in the following description, it being understood that various changes in form, proportions and minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the ap ended claims.

The improved fastener forming the subject matter of the present invention is principally designed for closing the mouth of a bag, sack or similar containing receptacle and by way of illustration is shown in position on a bag or sack of the ordinary construction in which 5 designates the body of the bag, and 6 the mouth thereof.

The device consists of a pair of piercing members 7 and 8 each preferably formed of a single length of wire or other suitable material having one end thereof provided with a piercing point 9 and its opposite end bent or coiled to form a terminal loop 10 ada ted to receive the corner 11 of said bag, t e wire after the loop 10 is formed being coiled around the body of the fastener at 12 and thence extended transversely across the top of the loop to form a locking tongue 13 the end of which is provided with a terminal point 14 adapted to pierce the adjacent corner of the bag and thereby lock the fastener against accidental displacement.

The inner ends of the piercing members 6 and 7 are preferably over-lapped so as to reinforce and strengthen the mouth of the bag and prevent the points 9 of said members from cutting or tearing an adjacent bag when several of said bags are disposed in contact with each other,

In using the device the side walls of th bag at the mouth thereof are folded downwardly to form a reinforcing lap and the piercing members threaded through the lap from opposite sides of the bag, as best shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The corners 11 of the bag are then drawn upwardly through the loops 10 and said corners pressed laterally against the locking tongues 14 which causes the points 14 to pierce the corners. of the bag and thus efiectually lock the piercing members in position on the bag.

In order to remove the fastener it is merely necessary to exert a slight lateral pull on one of the corners of the bag and at the same time press downwardly on the adjacent loop 13 which will disengage said corners from the locking tongue and thus permit the adjacent piercing member to be detached from the bag so that the contents thereof may be moved through the mouth of the bag in the usual manner. In some cases, however, it is desirable to have a larger discharge opening at the mouth of the bag and in which event both of the piercing members may be removed, as will be readily understood.

The fastener may be used for mending holes or tears in sacks by passing one of the piercing members through the cut or torn portion of the bag and then extending a portion of the sack through the adjacent loop 13 and pressing the same against the piercing member in the manner before stated.

The fastener may also be used for dividing the contents of the sack or bag by merely positioning the piercing members at the cen ter or other portion of the bag and threading the same through the walls thereof.

By forming the fastener in the manner described the piercing members may be threaded through a worn or frayed section of the bag for closing the mouth thereof Where a row of stitching would prove inadequate.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings there is illustrated a modified form of the invention in which the intermediate eye or loop 12 is dispensed with, the wire forming the coil being extended un- V der the body of the piercing member, as indicated at 15 and thence extended directly across the loop without first forming the eye.

The fasteners may be made in different lengths to accommodate different widths of bagsand may be readily bent into any desired shape after being threaded through the bag without liability of exposing the contents thereof.

From the foregoing description it will be seen that there is provided an extremely simple, inexpensive and efficient device admirably adapted for the attainment of the ends in view.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:

1. A bag fastener including cooperating members having their inner ends over-lapped and their outer ends provided with means for engagement with the adjacent corners of a ba L -A bag fastener including separable members adapted to pierce the walls of a bag and having their inner ends over-lapped and their outer ends provided with means for engagement with the bag.

3. A bag fastener including separable members adapted to pierce the walls of a bag and having their inner ends over-lapped. and their outer ends provided with means for engagement with the adjacent corners of the bag.

4. A bag fastener including seiarable members adapted to engage the walls of a bag and provided. with terminal loops for the reception of the corners of said bag, and means extending transversely across the loops and adapted to engage the corners of the bag for locking the members against accidental displacement.

5. A bag fastener including (o-acting members each provided with oppositely disposed piercing points adapted to engage the intermediate portion and opposite corners of a bag, respectively.

6. A bag fastener including separable members having their inner ends over-lapped and provided with terminal points adapted to pierce an intermediate portion of a bag, the opposite ends of said members being formed with terminal loops for the reception of the corners of the bag and provided with locking tongues extending transversely across the loop and adapted to pierce said corners.

7. A bag fastener including a pair of separable piercing members adapted to be threaded through a bag from opposite sides thereof and provided with terminal loops for the reception of the corners of the bag, and tongues extending transversely across the loops and having piercing points projecting beyond the walls of the adjacent oops for engagement with the adjacent corners of the bag.

8. A bag fastener including separable members having their inner ends over-lapped and adapted to be threaded through the walls of a bag from opposite sides thereof, said members being provided with. horizontally disposed loops adapted to receive the adjacent corners of the bag and having their terminals extended transversely across the loops and provided with piercing points adapted. to engage the adjacent corners of said bag.
