UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE N. BEARD, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
IMPROVEM ENT IN BALE-TIES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 204,525, dated June 4, 1878; application filed September 13, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE N. BEARD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Ties, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference bein ghad to the accompanying drawings, formin g part of this specification.
My bale-tie consists in a transverse slot made in one side of each end of the band, (which is of the ordinary band-iron,) the slots at one end being at the opposite edge to the slot or slots at the other end, so as to engage together, as shown. At the inner end of each slot is ahook-shaped notch or recess of rounded form, extending toward the end of the band, said recesses engaging together as the band is stretched out, and preventing any transverse slip after it is stretched.
1n the drawings, Figure l is a face view of the two ends of the band or hoop. Fig. 2 is an outside view of the two ends locked together. Fig. 3 is an inside View of the parts when locked together. Fig. tis an edge view of the ends when the slots are engaged, before the expansion of the hole and thepressme of the cotton upon the laps has flattened them against the inner side of the hoop.
A and B are the ends of the hoop. The end A has a single slot, at, extending transversely from one edge to near the middle of the hoop. At the inner end of this slot, and at that side of the slot which is toward the end of the band, is a notch or recess, a. The
' end B has similar slots a a, but upon the opposite edge to that upon A. The slots upon one end (see B) may be more or less in nuinher, so as to allow the band to be taken up to any desired height, according to the size of the bale; or where all the bales are reduced to a uniform size, a single slot at each end would be sufficient.
In looking the tie,the slots are first engaged together, as shown in Fig. 4, and then, as the bale expands on. taking off the pressure from it, the hoop is stretched out taut, and the parts of the tie caused to lie flat together, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the laps 0 being pressed tightly against the outer parts of the hoop. In this position the recesses a of each end engage together, and prevent any transverse movement of one end upon the other. The notches a are made rounding in form, so as to avoid any tendency to tear.
I am aware of Reissue Patent No. 7,360, granted 24th October, 1876, to J. W. Petty, for a slotted and recessed bale-tie. My tie, however, differs from his in not having any square or sharp ends or corners which will tear the contents of the bale or the person or clothing of the operator, besides tending to destroy the holding power of the tie. My tie is made with a slot or slots having rounded ends and seat, by which great holding power is obtained, and no sharp edges are left exposed to tear articles coming in contact therewith, or to break 011'.
I claim as my invention- The hoop provided with transverse slot or slots a at the edges, said slots having the rounded hook-shaped and round-seat notches a at their inner ends, and at right angles to the slots, substantially as set forth.
