Description

N.PETERS. PHOTO-L !THOGRAFHER, WASHINGTON D C time 'lateut 69 'GEORGE HUNTRESS GRA N'I, OF RICHMOND, INDIANA.
Letters'Patcnt No. 88,563, dated April 6, 1869.
IMPROVE!) SCHOOL-DESK AND SEAT.
To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE HUNTRnss GRANT, of Richmond, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in School-Desks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in so adjusting the leaf of a school-desk, that it may be slightly raised and withdrawn, and then let down,` or folded with the desk, thereby closing the bookbox; and in providing one or more sunken panels on the top of the desk, for the reception of the requisite ink-well, pens, and pencils, or vfor other purposes, as may be desired.
Also, my invention further consists in pivoting the seat to arms that are hinged', or pivoted to the staudards, whereby the folding, or revolution of the seat4 may be accomplished from either edge of the same, and with equal facility.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with reference to the drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my improved desk, and
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Figure 3 represents a plan view of the under side of the seat, and a section of the same is shown in VFigure 4.
Figure 5 is an enlarged view of a portion of the end of the desk. p
'Similar letters in the dilerent figures refer to like parts. The leaf A is provided, at either end, with a batten, XV, that engages with a projection, Z, on the cast-iron standards N N.
The connections, H H, consist of small curved bars of metal, one end being pivoted to the battens W W, and the other to the standards N N, in suoli a mauner that the line of the pivots is inclined to the horizontal plano.
By rrlcans of the abovedescribed mode of attachingr the leaf A, it may be slightly raised and withdrawn, until the battens \V NV are released from the projections Z Z, when it will readilyrevolve into the position shown by dotted lines in figs. 2 and 5.
lhe pins n n are designed to stay the connections H H,.when they have moved far enough to allow the leafl to revolve..
The book-box is provided with a cover, P, below the leaf, so that when the leaf is revolved, the books in the box are completely enclosed, and free from dust.
Sunken panels may be made 'in the top of the desk by removing portions of the board G, as shown at 0, tig. 1. l
The seat B is pivoted to the arms C C, as-shown at h 7:,the arms being hinged, or pivoted to the standards at l l.
By raising the back part of the seat, the whole may be revolved into the position shown by red lines in iig. 2.
By this method of revolving the seat, the smooth upper surface of the same is kept outward, while the attach men t-s on the under side are next the desk, where they are not liable to catch and injure the clothing, as is the case when the seat is folded inthe usual manner.
Should it become desirable, the seat may be rigidly secured to the arms C C, by means of screws, inserted through holes, provided for that purpose, in the arms.
A slate-rack, D, is provided on the under side of the seat, with flexible straps V V, that are attached at one end to the seat B, and at the other to the board D, thus providing for the retention of slates, should they be introduced from either side, as will be desirable when the seat is revolved in the usual manner, or from the back part, as represented-by red lines in lig. 2.
Having thus fully described my said invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In combination with the leaf A, the hinged connections H H, battens IV W, and stops Z Z, when constructed and arranged substantially as herein described.
2. Pivoting the seat B, near its front edge, to the hinged arms G C, for the purpose and in the manner specified.
` I GEO. H. GRANT.
