METAL TANK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April. 21, 1908.
Application filed-April 1'7, 1906. Serial No. 312,085.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMANUEL E. Non- QUIST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Tanks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to metal tanks and more especially to tanks of that class stiffened and reinforced at their upper edges or rims with metallic tubes, and my object is to produce metallic tanks of the character named possessing the required strength, rigidity and durability, expeditiously and at a minimum expenditure for material.
A further object is to produce a tank which in its preferred form requires but a single bending operation to secure the reinforcing tube reliably to the wall of the tank and impart to said wall and tube the required configuration.
With these general objects in view and others as hereinafter appear the invention consists in certain novel and peculiar features of construction and organization as hereinafter described and claimed; and in order that it may be fully understood reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a sectional perspective view of a portion of a tank wall and a reinforcing tube upon the same. Fig. 2, is a cross scetion of the same. Fig. 3, is a plan view of a com leted tank with the reinforcing tube partly in section.
In the said drawing, 1 indicates a tank, 2 the wall thereof, said wall being originally in the form of a fiat plate or sheet of the length and width required for the completed tank. The wall of the tank near its upper edge or margin is provided with a series of rivets or cross pins 3, said series paralleling the upper edge or margin of the wall.
4 indicates a metal tube of the required proportions, provided for its full length with a longitudinal slot or opening 5, the diameter of the tube being somewhat greater than the distance between the upper edge of the wall and said series of rivets or pins, so that the tube can be slipped endwise upon the wall and bear the relation thereto and to said rivets or cross ins shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 2. Vhen thus arranged it will be ap arent that endwise movement is required to effect the disengagement of the tube from the Wall.
The wall and tube are then bent by .means of bending rolls or in any other suitable or preferred manner to circular or other form required. Ordinarily the tanks are either of circular form as shown in Fig. 3 or of oblong rectangular form with semicircular ends. In either event when the bending operation of the wall and tube is completed the opposite ends are brought together as shown in Fig. 3, and as will be noticed in said figure, it is impossible to disconnect the tube from the wall. without subjecting the tank to a strain which it is never subjected to in practice, that .is to say, to a strain which will bend back the opposite sides of the tube or wall or draw the rivets from position or break them. The bottom of the tank can be secured in place in the usual or any preferred manner, it being immaterial in this connection how the same is formed or secured.
In practice it is preferred to slip the tube upon the wall when both are perfectly straight though it is obvious that they could be properly secured il initially curved in about the same degree. In fact if the wall is sullicienily llcxible it would be possible to slip the curved tube upon and bond the wall at the same time.
From the above description it will be apparent that l have produced a metal tank possessing the features of advantage enumcratcd as desirable in the statement of the object of the invention, and I wish it to be understood that I do not desire to be limited to the exact construction shown and dcscribcd, but that changes within the scope of the appended claim may be made in the form, proportion, detail construction, and arrangement of the parts without departing from the principle of (amstruction described and claimed.
Having thus described the invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is z- A tank wall comprising a rim consisting of a slotted tube and a wall projecting into the tube through its slot, and cross pins I) se cured to said wall and. bridging said slot and bearing against the inner side of the tube contiguous to the slot.
In testimony whereof I aHix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL E. N ()EQU 1ST.
