'DOOR-CATCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed June 27, 1907,. Serial No. 381,169.
To all whom it may concern.'
. Be it known that I, ANDREW AHLBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing `at St. Paul7 in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota7 have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door-Catches7 of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of my invention-is to provide a device of its kind which can be operated by means of a latch from either side of the door and when desired one of said sides moved so as to disengage the other,v leaving the catch set and out of connection with the latch.
This invention is simple and inexpensive in construction and can be applied to doors of various kinds.
In the accompanying drawings, Vforming part of this specificationrFigure 1 is a side view of my invention shown applied to a detail portion of a door; Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 taken on the line X-X, and Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 2 taken on the line Y-Y.
In the drawings A represents a detail ortion of a door to which a catch 2 is app ied in the ordinary manner. This catch has the usual spring latch bolt 3 carried by the casing 4 and a plunger 5 in the casing projecting in the slot 6 of the casing. These parts are of ordinary construction and are placed and fastened in the door in the customary manner. The plunger 5 extends downwardly and below it are a pair of thumb latches 7 and 8 projecting respectively through escutcheons 9 and 1() on the door. The latches are pivoted at 11 and 12-between flanges 13 and 14 on the inner surfacesof the escutcheons. The pivot connection for the' inner latch 8 is in the form of a separable hinge connection having a pair of notches 15 which are adapted to freely seat the latch upon the ivot 12. By raising the outer end of the atch and pulling it outward the latch is moved from the outer seat onto the inner seat. A stop 16 on the inner end of the inner latchlimits the outward movement and an opening 17 in the escutcheon l() permits the latch to be raised and tilted upon its pivot. The inner end 18 of the latch 8 presses upward against the plunger 5 when said latch is in either inner or outer position. The pivot connection for the outer latch is stationary and the inner end 19 of said latch 7 overlaps below the inner end of the inner latch 8 when the latter is in its innermost position upon the pivot 12. FVhen the vinner latch 8 is withdrawn so as to seat its inner notch upon the pivot 12 the inner end of the outer latch 7 is adapted to sweep past the inner end 18 of the inner latch 8 and by this means does not affect the operation of the spring latch 3.
A suitable opening 20 in the face plate 9 allowslthe outer latch 7 to swing freely upon its pivot 11. The upper edge of this opening limits the downward movementof the inner end of the outer latch 7 and a weight 21 is adapted to hold the outer latch 7 normally in substantially horizontal osition so that When the inner latch 8 is t rust inward it Jfreely overla s the inner end of the outer latch 7. The roken lines 22 in Fig. 2 indicate the outer osition of the inner latch 8 When the outer atch 7 does not affect the operation of the spring latch bolt 3. A suitable opening 23 is provided in the door for accommodating the latches and the usual handles 24 are shown applied to the escutcheons below the latches.
In accordance with the atent statutes, I' have described the rincip e of operation of my invention, toget er with the ap aratus which I now consider to represent t e best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the ap aratus shown is only illustrative and that t e invention can be carried out by other means and a plied to uses other than those above set fort i, within the sco e of the following claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination with a door, a spring latch bolt provided with a substantially vertical plunger for operating the same, a tilting inner latch movably coupled with its thumb piece projecting from'one side of said door and permitting its inner end to be withdrawn below said plunger and an outer latch pivoted With its thumb piece projecting from the l other side of said door, the inner end thereof adapted to press upward against the inner end of the inner latch when in inner position and to sweep past said end when said inner latch is in outer position.
2. In combination with a door, a spring latch bolt having its operating plunger arranged substantially vertical, an inner latch separatively pivoted upon said door with its i inner end adapted to press upward in inner and outer position below said plunger, and a second latch pivoted upon sait door with its inner end adapted to impinge against the inl In testimony whereof, l have signed. my ner end of the inner latch and to escape said name to this speellicatlon, 1n the presence of 10 inner end When sald lnner latch 1s 1n outer two subscribing Witnesses.
