ROAD-DRAG.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908.
Application filed May 25, 1907. Serial No. 375,705.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FITCH H. BEACH and FRED S. BEACH, citizens of the United States, residing at Charlotte, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Road-Drag, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to road drags and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a road drag made up of a series of angular steel blades arranged parallel to each other and gradually decreasin in length from the front blade to the rear b ade. A plate is located transversely upon the upper ortions of the blades and is riveted to each b ade and forms a means for holding the blades together. Said plate is reinforced by angular strips located upon its upper surface and at its ends and which may be used as runners when the implement is turned bottom side up for transportation. A draft chain is attached to the front blade and is provided at intervals with elongated links to which a clevis may be attached for connecting the implement with a swin le or double tree.
In t e accompanying drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of the dra and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of t e same.
The dra consists preferably of three blades designate as l, 2 and 3, although a greater number of blades may be employed, if desired. The said blades are preferably formed or cut from angle steel and have their upper flanges lying in the same plane while their lower flanges lie in para el planes. The front blade 1 is the longest while the intermediate blade 2 is the next longest and the rear blade 3 is the shortest. The plate 4 lies transversely over the intermediate ortions of the said blades and is riveted to t e horizontal portions of each. The said plate 4 is provided upon its upper surface and at its 0 posite on s with the metallic angle pieces 5 w iiich serve as strengthening ribs or braces to add stiffness to the plate and may also be used as runners for transporting the implement when the same is turned upside down. The clev'ises 6 are attached to the horizontal portion of the blade 1 at points beyond the ends of the plate 4 and t e draft chain 7 is connected at its ends with the said clevises. The said chain 7 is provided at intervals throughout its length with the enlarged links 8 with any one of which a tree clevis (not shown) may be engaged.
As the implement is drawn along the surface of a road the blades will smooth off the high places in the road and fill the dirt into the ruts and depressions. The front blade 1 will deposit a windrow of dirt at the center, or near the center of the road. The intermediate blade 2, being shorter than the blade 1, will leave a row of dirt just to one side of the first said row and the rear blade 3, being the shortest, will leave a row of dirt along side of the row made by the intermediate blade. Thus, the dirt is conveyed to the middle of the road in several small windrows rather than a single large one as would be the case if the blades were all the same length. By providing the draft chain 7 with the enlarged links 8 the draft animals may be attached to the implement so that the line of draft may be applied at any point along its length and the angle of inclination of the blade to the line of draft may be varied at will and the blades ma be caused to move with either end desired oremost. Thus, an adjustable and reversible drag is rovided which will throw more or less eart according to its angle of inclination with relation to the line of draft and may be operated in either direction at either side of the road by transferring the line of draft from one side of the middle of the implement to the other side thereof.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A drag comprising blades having vertical parallel portlons, a plate lying transversely over the blades and rigidly connecting the same together and means for connecting the drag with a propelling means.
2. A drag com rising blades which differ in length and w ich have vertical parallel ortions, a plate lying transversely over the iilades and connecting the same together and means for connecting the drag with a propelling means.
- 3. A drag comprising blades having vertical parallel portions, the forward blade being the longest and the blades gradually decreasing in length toward the rear of the im plement, a plate lying over the blades and connecting te same together and means for connecting the drag with a pro elling means.
i. A drag comprising bla es formed of angular material having portions which lie in transversely over the blades and connecting the same together, angle strips located at the end of said late and means for connecting the drag with a propellin means.
6. A drag comprising lades, a plate con necting the same together, a draft chain connected with the drag, beyond the end of the plate and having at intervals along its length enlarged links.
In testimony that We claim the foregoing as our own, We have hereto afiixed our signatures in the presence of two Witnesses.
FITCH H. BEACH. FRED S. BEACH.
