COTTON-SCRAPER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,297, dated September 17, 1.889.

Be it known that we, JOSEPH L. PETER and JOHN Y. JAMES, citizens of the United States, residing at Holly Grove, in the county of Monroe and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in Cotton- Scrapers; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cotton-scrapers; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character which shall be simple and durable and very efficient in use. \Ve provide for the adjustment of the handles, and thereby the scrapers, so that the latter may be moved nearer together or farther apart.

The invention consists in the peculiar combinations and the construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then particularlypointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of ascraper constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear View. Fig. 4 is a perspective detail, which will be more particularly hereinafter referred to by letters of reference. Fig. 5 is a detail in plan.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the tongue or pole, to which the draft is applied in any suitable or well-known manner.

13 are bars-one upon each side of the deviceformed with longitudinal portions a, attached to the tongue near the rear end thereof, thence bent outwardly and rearwardly, as shown at b, and from these inclined portions bent rearwardly in a substantially horizontal plane and then curved downwardly, as at c, and then turned slightly toward the front, as shown.

C are the handles, attached at their lower for .vard ends to the bars B, near the junction of the angular portions 1) with the rearwardlyextending horizontal portions, by means of horizontal pivots (I, so that said handles may be turned on said pivots when desired.

Secured to the horizontal portions of the bars B to the rear of the pivots of the handles is the iron D, the lower ends of the upright portions of which are secured to the said bars 13, the horizontal portion extending across between the handles, as shown. On the inner faces of the handles are the guides f, through which the upright portions of the iron D work. The upright portions of the iron I) are slightly curved from rear toward the front, as shown, to provide for the movin g of the handles up or down.

Pivoted to the inner faces of the upright portions of the iron D are the catches E, provided with a plurality of notches g, designed to engage the guides on the handles and hold the latter in their adjusted positions.

Secured to the rear end of the tongue is an eyebolt h, through which passes a rod F, the ends of which are passed through holes in the bars B and are provided with suitable nuts 7;.

Gr are the shovels, attached to the lower ends of the bars 13 in the following manner: At tached to the lower ends of said bars are the straps 7', having a loop 70, through which passes a bolt Z, which is headed to the shovel and provided at its rear end with an adjustingnut m, by which it is secured and adjusted.

H are transverse plates secured to the under side of the tongue or pole near the rear end thereof and extending beyond the sides of the tongue and forming ears n, in which are j ournaled the longitudinal shafts 0. The forward plate is formed with slots 19 to receive the ends of the bars or arms I, which are loosely sleeved on the shafts 0 and at their rear ends carry the scrapers J.

Pivotally secured to the shafts o and embracing the rear plate H at the ends thereof are the clips K, between which and the boxes L the arms or bars I are secured in any wellknown manner.

M are arms having bent ends secured to said boxes and at their other ends attached to the handles. By this construction the handles may be adjusted up and down, and as ICO the handles are moved the scrapers, through the connections just described, are caused to move simultaneously in opposite directions, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3,so as to throw them nearer each other or farther apart, as oocasion may require.

What we claim as new is 1. The combination, with the tongue, the bars B, and the handles pivoted thereon, of the scraper-arms pivotally connected with the tongue, and the arms connecting said scraperarms with the handles, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

I 2. The combination, with the tongue, the shafts 0 thereon, the scraper-arms pivotally connected at one end to said shafts, and the pivoted handles, of the arms connecting the handles with the scraper-arms, substantially as shown and described.

3. The combination, with the tongue, the bars B, the plates H, the shafts 0, journaled in said plates, the scraper-arms pivotally connected with said shafts, the clips K, and the handles pivoted on the bars B, of the arms M,

connecting the handles with the arms carrying the scrapers, substantially as described.

' 4. The combination, with the tongue, the bars B, the handles pivoted thereon, the plates H on the tongue, the shafts 0, journaled in the extended ends of said plates, the clips K, the boxes L, and the bars I,- carrying the scrapers and loosely sleeved on the shafts 0 at one end and attached to the clips and boxes between their ends, of the arms M, attached at one end between the boxes and arms I and at the other connected with the handles, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
