SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 374,254, dated December 6, 1887.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BARNEY COX J INNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the county of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cotton'Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in cotton-scrapers; and it consists in the peculiar construction and combination of devices, that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cottouscraper embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical t-ransversesectional view taken on the line a: m of Fig. 1.

A represents a beam, to the rear end of which is attached a vertical upright post, B.

0 represents the handles, which are similar to plow-handles, have their front ends attached to opposite sides of the beam, and are connected at suitable distance from their rear ends to the ends of the bar D, which extends transversely through the upper end of post B.

E represents a semicircular clevis, which is bolted to the upper side of the beam at the front end thereof, and from the front corners of the said clevis project a pair of upwardlyextending hooks, F.

G represents a pair of scraping-wings, each of which is formed from a single piece of plate metal bent at a suitable angle, and thereby constituting the front portion, H, and therearportion or wing, I, which extends outwardly at an angle from the rear end of front portion, H. The upper edges of the wings I are curved, as at K, and the lower edges of the front portions, H, are curved outward, as at L.

M and N represent a pair of inverted-U- shaped yokes, which connect the portions H of the scrapers together in a parallel position and pass over the upper side of beam E. Transverse bolts 0 pass through the lower portions of the said yokes and through the said beam and serve to clamp the said yokes rigidly to the beam. The arms of the front yoke, M, are connected at their lower ends by a bolt, P, which extends through transverse aligned openings made therein, and on one end of the said bolt is secured an adjustingnut, R, having the tail or handle S, by means of which it may be readily turned, so as to bring the front ends of the scrapers toward or from each other and thereby regulate the width of the ridges formed by the said scrapers.

T represents a rod, the center of which is attached to the rear side of post 13, near the lower end thereof. The ends of the said rod extend downward and rearward and are connected to the inner sides of the wings I.

By'providing the semicircular clevis with the hooks at its corners, a horse may be attached to either side of the beam and caused to walk on either side of the row to suit the convenience of the operator.

A cottonscraper thus constructed is extremely cheap and simple, is very light and easily operated, and is adapted to place the ground in such fine condition that the operation of hoeing the same will be greatly facilitated.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, in a cotton-scraper, of the beam, the yokes attached thereto and depending therefrom, and the scrapers having the front portions, H, attached to the lower portions of the yokes and the rear portions, I, diverging rearwardly, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the beam, the U- shapcd yokes attached thereto and having their arms depending therefrom, the scrapers attached to the lower ends of the said yokes, and the clamping-bolts extending transversely through the arms of the front yoke and thereby adapted to move the front ends of the scrapers laterally toward or from each other, substantially as described.
