Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. DWYER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Jefferson City, in the county of Cole and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in. Dusters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved duster em-v bodying a head, a handle having a chamber for the reception of the upper end of the head, a rod attached to the handle, and means at the lower end of the rod to engage the head of the duster and hold the same in the said chamber of the handle, as hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a duster in which the brush portion may be readily detached from the handle and renewed when the same becomes worn at a comparatively small expense.
In the accompanying drawing,Figure 1 is a sectional view of a duster constructed in accordance with my invention. Iig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same on a plane intersecting the chamber at the lower end of the handle. Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the rod and ring employed in securing the head of the duster in the handle.
The handle 1 may be of the form here shown or of any other suitable form, and the same is provided in its lower end with a coun ter bore forming a chamber 2 for the reception of the doubled or head portion 3 of the filaments 4 which constitute the brush. The said filaments are preferably sisal fiber. The same may, however, be of other suitable material, and I do not desire to limit myself in this particular.
A longitudinal bore 5 is made through the handle, from end to end thereof, the inner end of which bore communicates with the chamber 2. A rod 6 extends through the said bore and is provided at its lower end with a transverse opening 7, through which a ring or eye 8 extends. The outer end of the said rod is screw-threaded, as at 9.
The
filaments which compose the brush are passed through the ring or eye 8 and doubled or bent thereon, and when the rod 6 is passed up through the longitudinal bore 5 0f the handle the doubled or head ortion of the brush is caused to enter the cl famber 2 in the lower end of the handle. A nut 10 is then screwed on the said threaded upper end of the said rod, thereby drawing the latter upwardly and compressing the head or doubled portion of the brush in the said chamber 2 and hence firmly securing the brush in the handle and yet enabling the same to be readily detached from the handle and removed, when such brush becomes worn. To facilitate the turning of the nut and to also enable the same to be employed for hanging the duster from a nail, hook or other supporting object I provide the said nut with a loop or eye 11.
It will be understood from the foregoing that my improved duster may be readily manufactured at a comparatively slight cost and that the same may be used for an indefinite period of time, as the brush portion may be renewed at will as the same becomes worn.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A duster comprising a handle having a chamber in one end thereof, a rod extending longitudinally through said handle and having a ring or eye at its lower end in said chamber, a brush having its filaments assed through said ring or eye, doubled tfiereon and having such doubled portion disposed in such chamber, and a nut screwed on the upper end of such rod and bearing on the upper end of such handle, said nut having a loop or eye for the purpose set forth.
