Description

PATENTED APR. 7, 190 K. SJOBERG. I
NEWSPAPER HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED, AUG. 7, 1907.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
KARLSJOBERG, OF WEST LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
NEWSPAPER-HOLDER.
Application filed August 7, 1907.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, KARL SJoBERe, a citizen of the United States, residing at West ynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Newspaper-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to holders for newspapers, magazines and the like; and it has for its object to provide a simple, convenient, inexpensive and efficient device whereby a newspaper or a magazine may be held, sugported and extended in front of the reader.
ith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accom anying drawing has been illustrated a simp e and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the invention may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a side view showing a holder constructed in accordance with the invention with a part of a newspaper inserted therein. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the component parts of the device separated from each other. Fig. 3 is a side view of the device, partly in section, i nd taken substantially at right angles to Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like characters of reference.
The body of the improved holder is composed of two elongated slats or rods 1 and 2 the latter of which is provided with a terminal lug or tongue 3 adapted to be entered into an undercut recess 4 which is formed near one end of the member 1; it being understood that said members 1 and 2 are preferably, each, of semicircular cross section, or approximately so, so that, when placed together, they will combine to form an approximately cylindrical rod or staff; the member 1 being of a length sufiiciently exceeding that of the member 2 to enable it to be formed with an approximately cylindrical Specification of Letters Patent.

portion 5 wherein the undercut recess dis formed, as shown; said recess being in the nature of a cavity formed in the shoulder or upset portion 6 of the member 1 upon which the end of the member 2 equipped with the lug or tongue 3 will abut when the parts are assembled.
The free ends of the members 1 and 2 are exteriorly screw-threaded, as shown at 7 for engagement with an interiorly threaded socket 8 in a handle member 9 which serves to connect or assemble the members 12 with each other and with the pa er or magazine that is to be su ported in t e holder.
The operation an advantages of this invention will be readily understood from the foregoing .description when taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the handle 9 is unscrewed and de tached, the members 1 and 2 will be readily separated by disengaging the lug 3 from the recess 4; the leaves of a newspaper or magazine may now be readily introduced between the members 1 and 2 where such newspaper or magazine will be securely held when the parts are reassembled; it being understood that the members 1 and 2 are to be constructed of wood or other material possessing suflicient resiliency for the purposes of the invention. The holder may be manipulated by the handle 9; and a somewhat similar handle 10 may be secured or mounted upon the opposite end of the member 1.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, as new, is
The herein described newspaper holder comprising two elongated members, one of which is provided with a terminal longitudinally extending tongue and the other with an undercut recess for engagement with said tongue and said members having terminal contact portions provided with a continuous external screw thread, a handle member having an interiorly threaded socket engaging the threaded ends of the two members, and a rigid handle at the opposite end of said members.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
KARL SJOBERG.
