Be it known that I, JOSEPH PLAUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Separable Buttons, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to separable buttons; and it has for its object to provide a button of this class which may be readily applied to a garment in position for use; which will admit of the ready separation of the parts for the purpose of attaching or removing the button; which shall not involve the use of tools of any kind for the purpose of applying or removing the button, and which shall be simple in construction and thorougxhly efficient in operation.

ith these and other ends in view which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the improved construction and novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention; it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the parts or members of the improved button detached or separated from each other. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken longitudinally of the stem or shank and show ing the parts or members of the button, united on a piece of fabric.

Corresponding parts in both figures are denoted by like characters of reference.

The disk 1 which constitutes the button proper is provided with a stem or shank 2 I which is preferably of cylindrical shape 2 throughout the greater portion of its length, i but which preferably terminates in a head 3 of square or rectangular cross-section. Said stem or shank is provided with a centrally disposed recess or pocket 4 extending through the greater portion of its length, from the outer terminal of the shank in the direction of the disk or button 1; and adjacent to the opposite sides of said recess or pocket are formed two additional slots or recesses 55 which are preferably obliquely disposed as will be clearly seen by reference to Fig. 2.

The fastening member comprises a re silient \l-shaped shank 6, preferably bent from a piece of spring metal and provided at the ends thereof with laterally extending enlarged portions or disks 7 which may be disposed approximately at right angles to the side members of the V-shaped shank. The disks 7 are provided with struck-out tongues 8 which are bent in the direction of the \l-shaped shank, and are adapted for engagement with the recesses 5 in the button shank 2 when the V-shaped shank is inserted into the recess or pocket 4.

The manner of using this improved button will be readily understood from the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings. The fabric 9 to which the button is to be applied is preferably provided with an aperture, usually known as an eye 10, the edges of which may be buttonhole stitched as shown at 11, in order to prevent them from fraying although, of course, the fabric may be simply pierced for the passage of the button shank 2 without taking this precaution. After inserting the stem or shank 2 through the fabric, the fastening member is applied by inserting the V-shaped shank 6 into the recess or pocket 4, thus involving the necessity of compressing said shank until the side members thereof lie approximately in contact with each other. When the shank 6 has been partly pushed into the recess 4 the ends of the spring tongues 8 are placed in engagement with the outer ends of the inclined recesses 5, and the fastening member is then pushed home. Vl hen thus applied, the resiliency inherent in the fastening member will cause the spring tongues 8 to engage the inclined walls of the recesses 5 while the shank proper, 6, will frictionally engage the side walls of the recess 4, and the fastening member will thus be held in position with suflicient security to prevent the button from becoming accidentally detached. It may, however, be removed, when desired, by so manipulating the disks 7 as to compress the shank 6, when the fastening mem ber may be withdrawn as will be readily understood.

This improved separable button, as will be seen, is extremely simple and it may be manufactured at a moderate expense. It may be very readily and conveniently applied or detached, and it is therefore capable of being readily transferred from one garment to another, so that it may be used indefinitely.

The parts of the button may be made plain or ornamental, and of any suitable and desirable material.

Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new is:-

1. In a separable button a button member having a shank provided with a longitudinal recess or pocket and having recesses adjacent to the sides thereof, the walls of the longitudinal recess being inclined, and a fastening member comprising a V shaped shank, said shank being formed at the ends thereof, enlarged disks, said. disks being disposed approximately at the right angles of the side members of the V-shaped shank and tongues struck from the disks to engage the inclined recesses of the shank.

2. In a separable button a button memher having a shank provided with a central having a shank provided with a longitudinal recess or pocket and auxiliary obliquely disposed recesses, in combination with a fastening member comprising a V shaped resilient shank having laterally extending terminal disks, and tongues struck out from said disk in the direction of the side members of the V shaped shank.
