IMPROVED TABLE-ATTACHMENT I'OR CHAIRS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM ZIMMERMAN, of Bloomhave made a new and useful I mprovcmcnt in Table-Attachment for Chairs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, suificientto enable those skilled in the artto which it pertains, to manufacture and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and in which-- Figure 1 represents my improved attzwhment, in perspective, adjusted to a chair; v

Figure 2, a side elevation; and

Figure 3, an upper-and under view of the table A,

showing its construction more fully, and exhibiting the difi'erent parts of the same.

Figures 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, show separate parts of the I attachment, with their construction.

Like letters refer to similar parts of my improvement.

My invention consists in a device formed of several parts, to be used as an attachment for chairs, which can he used as a'table, book-stand, or rest, 850., and is particularly described as follows:

A represents the table, which is supplied with the pockets, or portfolios I and F, the former on top, the latter underneath, as shown in figs..l and 2.

E is a metal plate, containing a. socket and bar a, to receive and grasp the hook 12, upon the upper end of the hollow metal stand B.

It is not necessary that this standard be made hollow, but it is preferably constructed thus, for the reason that it is lighter, and may be easily adjusted, by meansof the screw and clamp, and the extension-rod V G, or a straight rod in place thereof, exactly to the height desired by the occupant of the chair.

' At the bottom of B is a hook, m, to take hold of the round of the chair, and, in case there is no round, then a claw may be used instead, or a clamp, to fasten it to the leg of the chair.

K represents a clamp, which is designed to fasten the standard 13 to the chair.

I is a pad, or piece of wood or metal, fastened to the hollow part h t, by means of a rivet, or in' any other suitable manner, as shown in fig. (3, which is a top view of the clamp K, seen in ligs. 1 and 4.

The inner cylinder 71, fig. 5, by its shape, taken in connection with the shape of the outer shell -i-,'to which it is fastened by a rivet, or pivot 1), enables one. by means of it and the thumb-screw I, to clamp the rod 13,

whichs upports the table A, firmly to the chair, as will hereafter more fully appear.

B", fig. 7, represents a standard of wood, with metal tips b an, the latter supplied with a thumb-screw, to enable the occupant of'a chair to adjust the height of the reading-table for use.

G, fig. 7, shows a sectional view of the clamps to he used, which work with a screw-thread upon the standard, although they may, if desired, be arranged as in figs. and 4.

Fig. 8 shows another modified form in which the standard B may be constructed, the same being in two parts, the lower hollow, and the upper part sliding in it, as the parts of the telescope, being retained at any desired height by a sct-scrcw, l. ington, in the county of McLean, and State of Illinois,

O, figs. 1 and 3, is a forked brace, hinged to one end or edge of the table A, and cxtendin g downward, toward the centre, grasping the standard B by the sliding collar D, jointed to the brace O at 0:, and supplied with a thumb-screw, to fasten it at any desired height, thus giving the table A any wished-for inclination. This collar may be constructed, as in fig. 3, with a. hasp, as

seen at D.

E, fig. 2, represents a top view and side elevation of the metal plate fastened underneath the table A, as seen in fig. 3.

G, fig 3, is a device which may be attached to the under side of the table, by means of the cleats g, which are furnished with a mortise on the side next to the table, to receive its arm G, and consists of metal or wood, with a net, R, at the outer end, and an opening large enough to receive a bottle of ink. The same device is seen, also, at G, fig. 1.

H is a lamp-stand attached to the rod 0, which slides into the hollow-bcnt standard 11, which itself is fitted with the collar g, to slip over the standard B.

y and ll are supplied with thumb-screws, e and f, to regulate the height.

V G, fig. 1, represents a device, composed of a bent rod, slipping into the standard B, as hcrcinbefore de scribed. The object of this is to carry the table A further from the body, when it is desirable to use it as a work-stand, 850.

In order to fasten my attachment to a chair, place the standard B so that the hook m will grasp one of the lower rounds. Draw it up snug, thenlet down the clamp K, until the part, or pad J, rests upon the chair seat; The spur 0 is .then made to enter one of the notches, n, and the thumb-screw l is then turned in which passes directly upon the spur 0, and prevents it from comingout, and the outside shell, or claw i, turning upon its centrg p, the piece K is forced down upon the chair-scat, thus securing the stand firmly to the chair, in an upright position.

The table A may be made of any desired size, and also the standard B and accompanying parts.

The table can be made with hinges, so it may be doubled up, for convenience in carrying, and the standards may also he in joints short enough to he put into an ordinary valisc when travelling.

Having thus described my improvement,

What I claim as new, and of my own invention, is-

1. The construction and arrangement of the standard B, the clamp K, the table A, the metal plate E, the hinged forked brace 0, combined to operate substantially as set forth.

2. The adjustable hinged clamp K, consisting of the parts J h i o p constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose described.
