PATENTED MAR. 17, 1908.
w. J. WILLIAMS PIPE APPLICATION FILED 0 OT.17. 1907.
attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIGE.
WILLIAM J. WILLIAMS, OF CARRICK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDMOND E. SOI-IELLHASE, OF UNIONTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
Application filed. October 17,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM J. VVILLIAMS, l a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrick, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to smoking pipes, and its primary object is to provide a pipe with a chamber or reservoir below the pipebowl to receive nicotin, and prevent the same from being drawn up into the stem of the pipe and the mouth of the smoker.
A further obj eet of the invention is, to provide a pipe comprising separable sections so connected as to insure an air-tight joint between the sections and at the same time permit the sections to be readily disconnected for cleaning.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and its features of novelty will be set forth and defined inthe appended claims.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pipe embodying the invention, the interior construction being shown by dotted lines, Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner sides of the two sections of the pipe bowl, Fig. 3 is a top plan of the bowl sections disconnected, Fig. 4 is a top plan of the bowl sections connected together, Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section of the bowl, and Fig. 6 is an end view of the stem formed integral with the bowl.
The pipe consists of two separable sections 1. and 2, a mouth-piece 3 and a sleeve or ferrule 4 for detachably connecting the mouth-piece to the pipe stem. The section 1 which constitutes half of the pipe bowl is provided with an integral upwardly pro jecting extension 5 forming one half of a sectional stem, and the front edge of said section 1 is recessed to provide a vertical dove-tail groove 6, and a transverse beveled shoulder 7. The section 1 is hollowed out as at 8 to form half of the bowl, and below the concavity 8 a recess 9 is formed, said recess being of crescent shape and of triangular form in cross section as shown in Fig. 5. The inner side of the stem section 5 is formed Specification of Letters Patent.
with a smoke passage 10 leading from the Patented March 17, 1908.
1907. Serial No. 397,783.
outer end of said stem section to the bottom of the bowl, and communicating by means of a port 11 with the recess 9. A curved flange 12 projects from the lower edge of the section 1, said flange extending from the outer end of the stem section 5 and terminating in the shoulder 7, and having its upper surface 13 beveled as best shown in Fig. 5. The upper end of the stem section 5, and the adjacent rear side of the bowl section are recessed to form a dove-tail groove 14.
The section 2 is hollowed out as at 15 to provide the other half of the bowl, and it is formed with an integral stem section 1.6 to fit the stem section 5 of the other bowl section. This section 16 is formed with a smoke passage 17, coinciding with the passage 10,
and the section 2 is also formed with a crescent shaped recess 18 and port 19 corresponding to the same features of the section 1. The section 2 :is provided at its front edge with a dove-tail tongue 20 fitting the groove 6 of the cooperating section, and at its rear side with a curved tongue 21 having a beveled surface 22 to form a dove-tail joint with the groove 1 1. The under surface of the section 2 is formed with a dove-tail groove 23 extending from the lower end of the tongue 20 to the outer end of the stem section 16, said groove receiving the flange 12 of the section 1.
To connect the sections, the section 2 is raised above the section 1 to permit the tongues 20 and 21 to slip down into the grooves 6 and 14. This brings the recesses 9 and 18 together to provide a reservoir chamber for nicotin which drops through the opening formed by the ports 11 and 19. It will be apparent that any nicotin accumulated in the reservoir cannot be drawn back into the stem as it is out of the line. of draft or suction from the bowl, and the advantage of thus disposing of the nicotin in point of comfort to the smoker is obvious. The dove-tail connections between the sections insure air tight joints, and no securing means other than the ferrule 4 need be employed.
After the sections are connected the ferrule or sleeve 4 is slipped over the stem and the mouth piece 3 is secured in place, said mouth piece having a threaded nipple 24 fitting an internally threaded socket 25 in the outer end of the sleeve 4. To disconnect the sections for cleaning, the mouth piece and ferrule are removed after which the sections 1 and 2 may be easily separated,
thus permitting them to be thoroughly tical tongues of the section 2 inclined at its 1 cleansed.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
In a pipe, the half sections 1 and 2, the said section 1 having dovetailed grooves in its vertical walls and having a curved flange along its lower side projecting beyond the matching face of the section and terminating at the base of one of said grooves in an inclined shoulder, the section 2 having dovetailed tongues to engage said grooves and having a groove along its base to receive the curved flange of the section 1, one of the verlower end to engage and fit with said inclined shoulder, each section provided beneath the bowl-chamber with a recess and having an opening leading from the recess to the bowl-chamber and located adjacent to the smoke outlet from the bowl-chamber.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. WVILLIAMS.
