PATENT OFFICE.
ISAIAH L. HAUSER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 748,729,dated January 5, 1904.
Application filed February 19, 1903. Renewed November 12, 1903. Serial No. 180-958. (No model.)
To all whomit may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAIAH L. HAUSER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention is an improved tobacco-pipe in which the bowl is composed of separable sections, and the stem is also composed of separable sections, whereby the pipe may be readily and thoroughly cleaned; and it consists in the particular construction and combination of devices, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectionalview of a tobaccopipe embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, taken on a plane intersecting the two separable sections of the bowl and indicated by the line a a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional View of the same, taken on the plane indicated by the line b b of Fig. 1. Fig. dis a similar view taken on a plane intersecting the enlargement in the stem and indicated by the line 0 c of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment ofmy invention I construct the bowl 1, which may be made of any suitable material, of a pair of separable sections 2,which are divided by the axial point 3, which extends longitudinally thereof. The bowl is also formed with a comparatively short stem 4:, which also comprises a pair of separable sections lfldivided longitudinally. The sections 2 of the bowl are provided with opposite studs or locking-lugs 5 and an underlying annular groove 5, which is here shown as disposed on the exterior of the said sections, and the latter are joined together by a band 6, which may be made of any suitable material and which rests on the shoulder 7 at the base of the groove 5. The band 6 has looped offsets 6 by which it may be slipped past the studs or lugs in application and removal. It will be understood that by first removing the band, which may be done by turning the same to bring the offsets opposite the lugs and drawing the band upwardly, the sections of the bowl of the pipe and of the short stem portion 4 thereof may be separated. In applying the band the offsets are brought into coincidence with the lugs and the band forced down and turned to move the odsets past the lugs, whereupon the latter will hold the band from upward displacement, as will be readily understood.
The stem 8 of the pipe comprises a pair of longitudinal separable sections 9, each of which is formed with achambered, semicylindrical, or other suitably-shaped enlargement 10. When the sections of the stem are placed together, a sponge or other suitable absorbent 11 is placed in the chambered enlargement of the stem to arrest the nicotin.
The end portions 12 13 of the separable sections of the stem are respectively coupled detachably to the stem portion at of the pipe and the mouthpiece 14 of the pipe by means of coupling sleeves l5 16 or suitable screwthreaded connections. The sleeves are closely fitted on the ends of the stem, the stem portion of the bowl, and the mouthpiece to effect tight joints and prevent leakage.
It will be understood from the foregoing description that not only do the coupling-sleeves connect the longitudinal separable sections of the intermediate portion of the pipe-stem together, but also serve to couple the same detachably to the stem portion of the bowl and the mouthpiece.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved tobaccopipe will be readily apparent without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing fromthe principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is
l. Apipe comprising a bowl formed in sepa tions having a chambered enlargement, the interior of which connects with the bore of the stem, a mouthpiece, a sleeve 16 separably connecting the mouthpiece to one end of the intermediate portion of the stem, and a sleeve 15 separably connecting the opposite end of the intermediate stem portion to the stem portion of the bowl, substantially as described.
2. A pipe comprising a bowl formed in separablesections and havingalongitudinallyseparable stem portion formed therewith, means to detachably secure the sections of the bowl together, an intermediate stem portion formed of longitudinally-separable sections having an elongated cylindrical chambered enlargement, the interior of which connects with the bore of the stem, a mouthpiece, a sleeve 16 separably connecting the mouthpiece to one ISAIAH L. HAUSER.
