Description

Q dei @Statuut HUBERT L. JUDAD, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
Letters Patent No. 88,179, lated .Ma/rch 23, 1869.
IMPROVED CORD-TIGHTENER FOR. CURTAIN-FIXTURES.
Thi Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same,
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that'I, HUBERT L. JUDD,.of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented and made an Improvement in Cord-Tighteners for Curtain-Fixtures; and I do herebydeelare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making part of this specification, whereinand Figure 2 is a front view of the same.
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
Gord-tiglteners have heretofore been made with a wedge sliding in a grooved stock, and acting to clamp the sliding block that carries the pulley.
Fixtures 'of this class are either liable to become wedged too tight, or else not to hold the pulley under the strain of the' cord.
Other cord-tighteners have been made, in which a rack and pawl have been employed.
' My said invention consists in a cord-tightener, formed by combining the wedge and block of the pulley with a rack, so that the block and wedge, acting against each other, throw a tooth into the said rack, and detain both parts to whatever point they may be adjusted, thus secnriugfthe pulley without the parts binding tightly, as heretofore, and at the same time the usual appearance of the cord-tightener is maintained.
In the drawing, the slide a is formed with eyes at the ends, for'attaching it by screws or tacks, as at 2,25 It also has rack-teeth, 3, as before usual, and the returned edges, between which the block b and wedge c slide.
Figure 1 is a vertical section of said cord-tightener,
The pulley d is attached wedge c, and a projection, or tooth, 4, upon c, is provided, `so that it is pressed back into the rack-teeth 3 by the inclined surfaces of b and c, that come in contact.
The parts slide freely when the inclined surfaces of b and c' are sufciently separated to allow the tooth 4 to be drawn from the ,rack 3. Y
By this construction of cord-tightener, the advantageous features of the wedge and ratchet-fixtures are combined, the disadvantages of both are removed, and the appearance of the ordinary wedge cord-tightener is maintained.
. The block of the pulley, acting to press the end of the wedge against the bottom surface of the slide, pre vents the edges of the Yslide being bent, as has heretofore frequently been the case, by the block and wedge acting against each other, as in the ordinary wedge-tixture.`
What I claim, and desire-to secure by Letters Patent .is-4
' '.ihe slide a, with rack-teeth 3, or projections in its bottom surface, in combination with the pulley d, blocks b and c, with their inclined surfaces provided I with a tooth, or projection, 4,-that is forced back against said bottom surface of the slide, as and for the'purposes set forth.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signav ture, this 4th day of February, A. D. 1869.
` HUBERT L. J UDD. Witnesses:
